Job Summary:
Supervise security personnel and ensure all Monterey Bay Aquarium properties, employees, contractors, and visitors are conducting their activities in a safe and secure environment; Provide support with oversight of the daily Security Department 24-hour operations and coordinate staff resources across the Aquarium and maximize the number of staff-guest interactions and the high level of staff performance; Coach, motivate, and evaluate Security Department personnel; Under the direction of the Manager of Security, ensure security checks of Aquarium properties are made, emergencies are handled professionally, records on lost and found items are maintained, and assists in or administers various projects as assigned; Assist in other Guest Experience areas as needed, and handle guest service-recovery in a professional and efficient manner; Perform other duties as required.
Core Activities:
Recommend process and program improvements/enhancements for positive change and furtherance of the Aquarium mission.
Assist with the implementation and interpretation of policies and procedures.
Supervise assigned staff, monitoring and evaluating their performance, training, and duties; document employee performance, provide ongoing feedback regarding levels of performance; Incorporate activities for staff development during weekly performance discussions, annual performance summaries from shopper reports, guest comments, audience research, other MBA teams, and personal observations.
Plan, organize, schedule, assign, and supervise the work of security personnel, or employees engaged in security activities, including requests off, scheduling overtime, maintaining staff time cards; Oversee daily operational duties including staff scheduling, opening/closing of the Aquarium, daily shift briefings, customer service/recovery, staff deployment, crowd control, trouble shooting, emergency response/management and maximize staff-guest interactions.
Supervise and participate in conducting rounds, inside or outside of the Aquarium and around equipment yards and participates in preventing unauthorized persons from entering assigned closed parts of buildings or grounds.
Update and maintain computer databases of security card holders by conducting regular audits, provide, and authorize levels of access clearance to buildings and doors; Operate and maintain computer security systems in the Security Operations Dispatch Center.
Review and approve various reports such as incident, accident, and medical reports to ensure accuracy; Complete medical and incident reports (e.g., potential building fire and safety code violations, medical emergencies, etc.)
Develop and facilitate Security training activities for Security and Guest Experience in collaboration with Security leadership. (e.g., CPR, de-escalation, Officer safety, etc.)
Support the process and selection of new hires for the Security Department and other Guest Experience Division vacancies.
Participate in various Aquarium committees (Sustainability, Safety, Training, DEI, Animal Health & Welfare, Operating, etc.), providing input and perspective as an active committee member.
Coordinate with Security vendors on equipment issues and maintenance (i.e., cameras, alarms, access control, etc.)
Resolve escalations involving complex conflicts and problems i.e., staff, guests, volunteers, etc.
Develop and facilitate Aquarium-wide AZA Accreditation drills, in collaboration with Security management.
Provide oversight of daily security operations, staff schedules, daily briefings, service recovery, and emergency response/management
Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs ):
Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Administration of Justice, or related field; 2 years of previous security experience and 2 years of previous security supervisory experience; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
Proficiency in PC environment and strong working knowledge of MS Office suite; must be Outlook proficient
Ability to multitask and prioritize activities based on urgency
Identify and analyze problems; be able to use sound reasoning to arrive at conclusions and find alternative solutions to complex problems; able to distinguish between relevant and irrelevant information to make sound and logical judgements
Express ideas and facts in writing in a clear, succinct, and organized manner
Understands and appropriately applies procedures, requirements, regulations, and policies related to security surveillance and access control operations
Understands supervisory principles and practices sufficiently to be able to establish and implement subordinates’ performance evaluation programs
Understands supervisory theories and methods sufficient to be able to perform a variety of supervisory functions
Ability to recall and relate information accurately and reliably and be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
Must be able to pass and maintain a comprehensive background and local police check; be free of felony, misdemeanor, and other types of convictions with a verdict of anything other than not-guilty
Must possess a valid California Driver’s License and maintain clearance in the DMV Pull Program
Ability to pass post-hire drug screening test and random, periodic drug screening tests
Must be able to work Day (5am-1:30pm), Swing (1pm-9:30pm) and Nights (9:15pm-5:15am) shifts as assigned or scheduled
Available to work both weekend days and holidays

Hourly Compensation Range:
$28.99 - $35.58 Starting rate will vary based on previous experience and relevant skills/knowledge set
