Position Summary
The Fleet Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for managing a maintenance shop under the oversight of a Maintenance Manager. This role supervises a technician (mechanic) team responsible for preventive maintenance and repair of a diverse fleet including pickups, service trucks, roll-off trucks, and waste trucks, as well as machinery supporting post-collection and container shop operations. The supervisor ensures that all repairs and maintenance are performed in compliance with company safety and regulatory standards, and all federal and state regulations. Planning and scheduling of work to reduce downtime and maintain productivity is a key focus.
Principal Responsibilities
Provide leadership and direction to A, B, C level, and lead technicians, ensuring maintenance and repair work is safe, efficient, and timely.
Monitor operational performance and efficiency; take corrective action as necessary to meet goals.
Report to management on team performance and recommend process or program improvements.
Supervise the maintenance shop through daily huddles, fleet walks, coaching, counseling, training, and performance evaluations.
Make hiring and termination decisions in collaboration with HR and management.
Conduct employee training and evaluate for merit increases, promotions, or job changes.
Inspect outside repairs to ensure compliance with company safety, quality standards, and regulatory requirements; follow up as needed.
Identify training opportunities, document issues, and address corrective action constructively with technicians.
Conduct quality control inspections; track issues and resolutions to ensure compliance with safety and regulatory procedures.
Oversee diagnostics on complex repairs and provide coaching. May road test vehicles to determine necessary repairs.
Manage maintenance shop inventory control to maintain adequate parts and equipment within budget.
Review and approve maintenance expenses within scope; escalate major expenses to manager.
Maintain advanced technical knowledge of diesel and alternate fuel engines, emission systems, transmission, brakes, hydraulics, electrical systems, HVAC, and welding for effective repair and maintenance.
Manage administrative tasks including payroll, employee records, maintenance records, software input (Dossier Maintenance Software), budget preparation, and departmental goal setting aligned with division objectives.
Travel once per week to a secondary site as needed.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required.
Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications preferred:
ASE T2 Diesel Engine
ASE T3 Drive
ASE T4 Brake
ASE T5 Suspension and Steering
ASE T6 Electrical/Electronic
ASE T7 HVAC Systems
ASE Master Certified
Minimum Requirements
3+ years of experience in maintenance of heavy equipment.
1+ year supervisory experience in lead technician, supervisor, or similar role.
Knowledge of fleet maintenance is preferred, with strong leadership skills.
Understanding of DOT, OSHA, and all applicable federal and state regulations related to heavy equipment and fleet maintenance.
Ability to work second shift hours and occasional Saturdays.
Candidates with a “hoppy work history” will not be considered.
Additional Information
This position will primarily be based at the Kalamazoo facility.
80% of the role focuses on operational oversight; 20% on administrative duties.
Onboarding includes training with the Maintenance Manager, online courses, and collaboration/networking with other supervisors on-site.
The interview process consists of 3 interviews over a 2-week period.
