JOB SUMMARY:
The Audio Engineer - Classical Recording Specialist’s main duties are to handle all aspects of audio recording and streaming with an emphasis on large scale orchestral/choral/opera events including mentoring engineers with other specialties. Additional responsibilities include providing sound reinforcement for assigned events (concerts, rehearsals, recitals, conferences, and studio sessions) and ensuring the performance of daily tasks of RPTS. Scheduling for this position is primarily event driven. This individual reports to the Director of Recording and Performance Technology Services.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
● Record/stream official NEC events and student recitals in all NEC performance spaces.
● Run recording sessions in our studios as well as NEC performance spaces.
● Set up and operate sound reinforcement systems for official NEC events, student recitals, and outside renters in all performance spaces.
● Participate in the design, installation and implementation of new technologies, systems, and services as the needs of the NEC community change.
● Maintain current systems.
● Assist with the running of the RPTS office including oversight of our student self run studio, Flat Pack Studio, and our equipment loaner library, R&R.
● Mentor fellow engineers and train student workers for recording, streaming, sound reinforcement, basic tech support, and front office duties.
● Work collaboratively and discreetly with students, faculty members, alumni, staff, and other stakeholders to take projects from conception to completion.
● Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
● A thorough understanding of classical recording/mixing/editing techniques and streaming protocols and the ability to train/mentor fellow engineers in large scale performance capture.
● A minimum of 5 years of experience recording large scale orchestral, choral, operatic, and jazz, performances in various environments (Concert hall, festival, small venue).
● Experience with various methods of amplifying classical and traditional music performance, including electronics in contemporary classical music and performances utilizing amplified and non-amplified elements.
● Demonstrated experience in programming and operation of digital consoles, Shure RF/wireless frequency management, speaker processing/DSP systems, and network infrastructure that supports these systems.
● Dante level 3 certification required.
● Strong system troubleshooting skills and attention to detail.
● Proficiency with recording, editing, conferencing software and applications including, but not limited to: Nuendo, Wavelab, vMix, Izotope RX, Zoom, and Google Workspace.
● Experience with AV systems support, including projection systems, standard video formats, and Crestron systems desirable.
● Experience with video recording, camera and switcher operation, remote PTZ operation/configuration, NDI, and proficiency in Premiere is highly desirable.
● Ability to lift, move, and set-up gear.
● Ability to solder/repair broken cables (XLR, Cat, TRS, speakon, etc)
● Outstanding interpersonal skills and flexibility that allow for quality relations with a variety of constituencies.
● Ability and willingness to work nights and weekends is essential.
