The Opportunity

WSDOT is eager to hire multiple enthusiastic, career-minded individuals who want to make a difference and join our dynamic team at our Everett Maintenance Facility, supporting the vast transportation infrastructure for WSDOT’s Northwest Washington as part of our Plant Establishment Crew. This position is critical in fostering a respectful and healthy work environment with a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Under the direction of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3, this position performs a variety of highway maintenance work to ensure safe, efficient movement of goods, services and people. This position is cyclical in nature, recurs at approximately the same time each year, and lasts for a minimum of five months but less than twelve months during any consecutive twelve-month period.

Working in the maintenance area will require responsible, safety-minded individuals to accomplish skilled tasks that require operating trucks and various other highways and heavy equipment. These positions require quick response time to job sites. Highway maintenance crews are ready 24 hours a day, seven days a week. By taking on this role, you are serving a key and vital function to the State of Washington.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 will:

Perform day-to-day highway maintenance operations and entry-level landscape maintenance.

Perform manual labor utilizing hand tools and power tools for extended periods of time (e.g. chain saws, weed eaters, hedge trimmers, shovels, spades, post hole diggers, rake, wrenches, brooms, pruners, hand saws, axes, sledgehammers, and pitchforks.

Establish, maintain and repair landscaped areas, including planting and remediating sites, brushing, and mowing. Operate mowers and chippers.

Perform landscape maintenance on roadside and mitigation sites.

Install, maintain, and repair guardrail, fences, impact attenuator concrete barriers and other safety features.

Assist in assembling, installing, and replacing signs, sign components, and signposts using a variety of equipment and tools.

Remove dangerous trees; provide vegetation management, such as mowing, applying pesticides; establishing, maintaining, and repairing landscaped areas, including planting and remediating sites.

Transport up to 50 lbs. of heavy equipment and materials.

Perform duties next to high-volume, high-speed traffic.

Perform duties low to the ground or at ground level.

Perform duties at elevated heights, above 25 feet over land or water.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

High school graduation or GED.

Valid Driver’s License.

One (1) year of experience performing maintenance activities in a related field of work.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

Washington State Flagging/Traffic Control Card.

Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License.

One year of experience performing landscaping activities such as mowing, pruning, and fertilizing.

Knowledge of a variety of cleaning agents and how to mix for effective cleaning

Experience utilizing computer software such as Microsoft Office to include Excel, Word, and Outlook.

Experience operating a mobile device or tablet

This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.

This position is not eligible for remote work.

In addition to the salary range listed, a general wage increase of 3% will be applied for all state employees on July 1, 2025, upon legislative approval.

An additional 10% assignment pay is included in the listed salary.

In addition to the base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
