Position Overview:

The Reading Interventionist plays a vital role in supporting high school students who struggle with reading comprehension, fluency, and literacy skills. This individual provides targeted intervention services to help students improve their reading abilities, develop a love for reading, and succeed academically across various content areas. The Reading Interventionist collaborates closely with teachers, administrators, and parents to identify student needs and implement evidence-based strategies to enhance reading proficiency.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in education, literacy, English/language arts, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.

Certification: Valid teaching certification in literacy education, reading specialist certification, or eligibility for state licensure as a reading specialist.

Experience:

Prior experience teaching reading or providing literacy intervention services at the secondary level preferred.

Knowledge of literacy assessment tools, diagnostic procedures, and evidence-based reading interventions for adolescents.

Content Knowledge:

Strong understanding of reading development, literacy theory, and instructional strategies relevant to adolescent learners.

Familiarity with a variety of literacy resources, materials, and technologies to support reading instruction and intervention.

Interpersonal Skills:

Excellent communication, collaboration, and relationship-building skills to work effectively with students, teachers, parents, and stakeholders.

Ability to establish rapport with struggling readers, motivate students, and create a supportive learning environment conducive to reading growth.

Analytical Skills:

Proficiency in analyzing reading data, interpreting assessment results, and using data to inform instructional decision-making and intervention planning.

Critical thinking skills to diagnose reading difficulties, develop targeted interventions, and monitor student progress effectively.

Adaptability:

Flexibility and adaptability to meet the diverse needs of students and adjust instructional strategies based on individual learning profiles and progress.

Patience, empathy, and a commitment to promoting literacy and lifelong learning among high school students. Key Responsibilities:

Assessment and Diagnosis:

Conduct comprehensive assessments to evaluate students' reading levels, strengths, weaknesses, and specific literacy needs.

Analyze assessment data, including standardized test scores, reading fluency measures, and diagnostic assessments, to inform intervention planning.

Collaborate with teachers, special educators, and literacy specialists to develop individualized intervention plans tailored to students' reading goals and challenges.

Instructional Support:

Provide targeted instruction in reading comprehension, decoding, vocabulary development, and literacy strategies to small groups or individual students.

Utilize evidence-based reading interventions, such as guided reading, phonics instruction, fluency practice, and comprehension strategies, to address students' unique needs.

Adapt instructional materials, texts, and resources to accommodate diverse learning styles, interests, and abilities.

Progress Monitoring:

Monitor students' reading progress through ongoing assessment, progress monitoring tools, and informal observations.

Use data to track students' growth, adjust intervention strategies as needed, and set measurable goals for reading improvement.

Communicate regularly with teachers, parents, and administrators to share progress updates, discuss student needs, and collaborate on intervention plans.

Collaboration and Consultation:

Collaborate with classroom teachers to integrate reading interventions into the curriculum, aligning with content-area standards and instructional goals.

Consult with school staff, including administrators, counselors, and support personnel, to address systemic barriers to reading success and promote a culture of literacy.

Engage parents and guardians in supporting students' reading development, providing resources, strategies, and recommendations for fostering reading skills at home.

Professional Development:

Stay current with research-based practices, instructional strategies, and interventions in reading instruction and literacy development.

Participate in professional development opportunities, workshops, and conferences to enhance knowledge and skills related to reading intervention.
