Great Plains Veterans Services Center is a 501(c)(3) organization headquartered on the Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation in North Central Montana. The Veteran Support Service (VSS) program was established to provide Veterans with access to all VA benefits they have earned; assists unemployed Veterans to become self-sufficient by transitioning them into the workforce; supports homeless Veterans or at-risk for homeless Veterans in attaining and maintaining housing; provides mental health and suicide prevention support and provides case management. In 2014, GPVSC began operating its Veterans Transportation Services (VTS) program which provides transportation services to rural Montana Veterans for VA and VA-referred appointments. Between the VSS and VTS, GPVSC serves 45 counties which includes 6 Indian Reservations.

JOB OVERVIEW

The Food Service Operator position manages all aspects of day-to-day Burger Box operations from food preparation & safety, customer service, and inventory. The incumbent also supervises the Food Service Assistant and works in a manner which supports the mission of the Great Plains Veterans Services Center (GPVSC), to ensure that daily operations, procedures, and standards are maintained in accordance with federal, tribal, and state laws and regulations.

This position reports to the Administrative Manager and will be responsible for many duties, including but not limited to:

Plan and prepare a diverse menu of food items.

Ensure food quality and adherence to health and safety standards.

Monitor inventory levels and order supplies as needed.

Interact with customers in a friendly and professional manner.

Take orders accurately, prepare food and deliver catering orders.

Handle customer inquiries, complaints, and feedback effectively.

Set up and organize the Burger Box for service.

Maintain cleanliness and sanitation standards.

Manage cash transactions and maintain accurate records of sales.

Track expenses and revenues to ensure profitability.

Implement pricing strategies to maximize sales and profitability.

Ensure compliance with local health regulations and licensing requirements.

Stay updated on industry trends and regulations related to food safety and sanitation.

Make customer deliveries.

Supervision of burger box staff

Direct the work of staff and establish work schedules.

Provide food preparation, cash handling and customer service training, and support for assigned staff.

Work in collaboration with direct supervisor when recruiting, hiring, and onboarding; encountering behavior, performance, or reliability issues; and when staff request extended leave, or work accommodations.

Handle employee relations incidents in a timely manner.

Keep current on best supervision practices through research and training and ensure compliance with applicable policies and procedures.

Perform other duties as assigned in support of GPVSC mission and goals. On days when the Burger Box is closed, work is reassigned as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES

Knowledge of food preparation and sanitation procedures.

Skills in operating a commercial kitchen, menu planning, and cash handling.

Excellent communication skills to ensure efficiency and quality customer service with people from varied backgrounds.

Ability to work independently and in a flexible, dynamic team environment.

Ability to train and supervise the work of others.

Ability to maintain a calm and positive demeanor in the event of difficult customer interactions.

Able to multi-task and work under pressure during a busy lunch rush, in fast-paced, tight quarters while maintaining high-quality food preparation.

High degree of detail-oriented skill level.

Ability to work collaboratively and maintain a positive work environment and ensure organizational success.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Three years of food service experience or other directly related work.

Must successfully complete a food safety program.

Preferred: Experience managing a commercial kitchen.

Any combination of experience and training which provide the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

The Great Plains Veterans Services Center may provide a training assignment for chosen candidates who do not meet minimum qualifications. Employees in training assignments may be paid a lower starting wage. Conditions of the training assignment will be stated in writing at the time of hire.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS and WORKING CONDITIONS

Must be able to stand for 6-8 hours during service.

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Frequent interactions with clients, community members and GPVSC staff.

Occasional day travel required.

Create and maintain a safe/secure working environment by adhering to safety, security, and health requirements. Integrates injury, illness, and loss prevention into job activities by attending any necessary training and implementing best practices.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Must hold a valid Montana driver's license and successfully complete a driver's history check.
