Summary/Objective

The machine operator I operates and tends machines (brake, saw, laser, and other machines as assigned) to saw, cut, shear, slit, punch, crimp, and notch, bend, straighten, or perform any other fabrication operation on metal or plastic material.

Duties and responsibilities

Load workpieces or material into machines

Install, align, and lock specified punches, dies, cutting blades, or other fixtures machines, using gauges, templates, feelers, shims, and hand tools.

Measure completed workpieces to verify conformance to specifications, using micrometers, gauges, calipers, templates, or rulers

Examine complete workpieces for defects.

Start and stop operation of machines, using triggers, levers, pedals, or buttons

Read work orders or production schedules to determine specifications, such as materials to be used, locations of cutting lines, or dimensions and tolerances

Start machines, monitor their operations, record necessary data

Ensure all parts are labeled and have job travelers with correct parts and record count for those parts

Test and adjust machine speeds or actions, according to product specifications, using gauges and hand tools

Have all pieces verified by quality (in the event that quality is not available, use the "buddy system" to ensure quality of pieces)

Responsible for managing tooling needs

Position, align, and secure workpieces against fixtures or stops on machine beds or on dies

Qualifications

Education/Experience

High School Diploma (or GED or High School Equivalence Certificate)

1-2 years relevant machine operation experience

Technology

Knowledge

Production and Processing - Knowledge of basic machine operation processes

Mathematics - knowledge of arithmetic, basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, division

Skills

Reading Comprehension - Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents

Operation Monitoring - Watching indicators to make sure a machine is working properly

Operation and Control - Controlling operations of equipment or systems.

Quality Control Analysis - Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate

Working conditions

Sounds, Noise - Job requires frequent exposure to noises that may be distracting or uncomfortable

Indoors, Not Environmentally Controlled - Job requires working in a metal fabrication and warehouse environment without a cooling system.

Wear Common Protective or Safety Equipment: Job requires constant use of the required personal protective equipment

Duration of Typical Work Week - as a full-time position the standard schedule is 40 hours/week. Production volumes will often require voluntary or mandatory weekday and/or weekend overtime.

Physical requirements

Performing physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as lifting, walking, stooping, and handling of materials

Must be able to lift and move 50 lb parts or fixtures.

Must be able to stoop, bend, and reach overhead to assemble and/or move products.

Must be able to work in safety sensitive role, fit for duty and free of any adverse effects of drugs or alcohol, including prescribed or over the counter drugs or other substances which may alter job performance during working times (e.g., drowsiness, impaired reflexes or reaction time, lack of concentration, etc.).

Must be able to stand and work on your feet for an entire shift
