Position Overview

The Claims Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of claim processing within the Virginia Birth-Related Neurological Injury Compensation Program. This role involves managing a small team, ensuring claimants are paid accurately and in a timely manner, and liaising with various stakeholders including the Attorney General’s Office, Worker’s Compensation Commission, and external service providers. The Claims Manager will also handle housing and vehicle projects for qualified claimants. This position is Exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and reports to the Executive Director.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Oversee the processing of approved claims, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of payments.

Manage a team of up to five staff members, providing guidance and support.

Identify and resolve bottlenecks and inefficiencies in the claims processing workflow.

Prepare accurate reports for various agencies, update and maintain spreadsheets containing claimant, van, and housing information.

Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and guidelines related to claims processing.

Provide training and development opportunities for team members to enhance their skills and performance.

Participate in special projects and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish rapport within different family and community settings.

Ability to manage and motivate a team effectively.

Proficiency in using Microsoft suite and other relevant software.

Knowledge of claims processing procedures and regulations is preferred.

Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality and professionalism.

Some experience in crisis intervention/de-escalation is preferred.

Education & Experience:

A bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance, healthcare administration, human services, or a closely related field is preferred.

5+ years of experience in claims management or a related field.

Experience in the healthcare or insurance industry is a plus.

Experience in real estate or apartment management is helpful.

Knowledge of legal principles, Worker’s Compensation, and state-related guidelines.
