Position Summary

The Scientist, Advanced participates in research and development activities linked to new product and process development initiatives using established mathematical and scientific techniques.

Duties And Responsibilities

Lead product or process development projects.

Work directly with customers and Division Sales & Marketing to develop new products for existing markets identified by the division.

Develop expertise in appropriate materials technology, as necessary to plan, execute and evaluate laboratory and machine-based trial programs, using the Design of Experiments methodology.

Use appropriate DFSS/DFM tools and InnoHVision stage gating process for development projects.

Work with manufacturing, purchasing and technology on Margin Improvement Initiatives (MIPs).

Benchmark competitor grades and technologies.

Patent novel inventions.

Interface internally and externally.

Develop introductory relationships with customers and vendors.

Provide technical guidance to management, divisions, customers and manufacturing on new and modified product development efforts.

Communicate plans and results effectively.

Influence scientists and managers at multiple locations.

Supervise laboratory technicians to achieve product development objectives and develop technician’s technical and personal skill base to maximum potential.

Provide technical reports and presentations to internal and external project stakeholders, including contributions to Atrium knowledge management system.

Understand the relevant end use application.

Assist Division Sales and Marketing with technical service in the selection of existing grades capable of meeting stated technical and processing requirements.

Keep abreast of relevant industry, applications and materials technology trends through literature, seminars and market contact.

Be knowledgeable about test methods used to determine physical characteristics of the material as well as its performance in the end use application.

Education/Experience

BS degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science plus four years relevant work experience OR MS degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science plus two years relevant work experience OR Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Fiber, Textile, Materials Science or related fields

Ideal candidate will have a deep understanding and experience with membrane technology in the water purification fields, in the markets of BioPharma or Food & Beverage

Strong leadership, project management, time management and communication skills.

Effective team participant in product or process development programs.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, Licenses, Certifications, Etc

Competent skills in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word

Six Sigma Green Belt preferred.

Basic knowledge of how to run a patent search for education, FTO or prior art purposes.

Core Competency Requirements

Competent scientific acumen to use scientific judgement, discernment and perception in laboratory settings.

Competent project management in meeting critical milestones and timelines

Strong end use application knowledge of H&V products

Strong understanding of H&V process technologies

Physical Demands: While performing duties of this job, the employee is often required to stand, walk, sit, talk, use hands to lift, carry, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; balance, stoop. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Occasionally required to climb stairs, kneel or crouch, balance.

Work Environment: Regularly exposed to hot and/or humid conditions in warmer months; wet and/or slippery areas, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. Work near moving and/or vibrating mechanical parts. The noise level ranges from quiet conditions to very loud noise requiring hearing PPE in some areas.
