Salary Range: $120,443 - $136,279 DOE
Our client, an esteemed nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing social service needs in the community, is looking for a Controller to join their team in downtown Seattle. This role is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced leader in nonprofit accounting to have a meaningful impact on the agency's financial operations and contribute to its mission-driven work.
As Controller, you will oversee the organization's accounting operations, ensuring compliance with GAAP standards and regulatory requirements while maintaining the integrity of financial systems. Leading a diverse team of professionals, you will manage a broad range of accounting functions, including payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, federal contract invoicing, and a representative payee program. You will also play a key role in financial reporting, budgeting, and audit activities.
Overview of the Controller role:
The Controller will manage and supervise two Accounting Managers and a team of 15 accounting professionals, ensuring smooth operations across all financial functions. You will lead the month-end and year-end closing process and ensure timely reconciliation of accounts and accuracy in financial reporting.
You will also manage grant and program budgets, ensuring that expenditures align with funding requirements. Your role will include overseeing the audit process, serving as the primary point of contact for external audits, and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal tax regulations. Additionally, you will help develop and implement accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls, while seeking opportunities to improve efficiency and accuracy in accounting operations.
As Controller, you will also take a leadership role in mentoring and developing your team, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment that aligns with the organization's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications of the Controller role?
BA in any academic discipline (BA in Accounting, Finance, or equivalent preferred).
At least 5 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a managerial or supervisory role.
At least 2 years in nonprofit or governmental fund accounting, with strong familiarity with federal contract compliance and audit management.
Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Office. Familiarity with Abila MIP, Paylocity, and Microsoft Access is a plus.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain financial data to both finance and non-finance managers and senior leadership.
Exceptional analytical and organizational skills, with the ability to interpret data and provide strategic solutions.
CPA (active or inactive) or in progress.
Experience with Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) or real estate development.
Knowledge of Uniform Guidance and federal grant management.
