The Lead Release Train Engineer (RTE) is assigned to a specific division or business line(s) and is responsible for ensuring that the grouping of Agile delivery teams supporting their assigned area (also known as the Agile Release Train or ART), works well together and follows Agile processes.
This critical, IT-based role partners closely with the VP of IT to ensure that the teams who comprise their ART collaborate effectively and successfully deliver against divisional roadmaps.
The RTE also supports the alignment of technology solutions to business goals and further enables their ART’s success by managing risks, dependencies, and roadblocks.
The RTE works closely with the VP of IT, Stakeholders, Planning Managers, Product Owners, Scrum Masters, Project Managers, Business Systems Analysts, Architects and delivery team members to help ensure IT’s thorough understanding of divisional roadmaps to successfully deliver work as committed.
They support the translation of IT roadmaps into actionable projects, business requirements gathering, epic aggregation, and feature estimation efforts.
They actively participate in IT planning efforts, steering committee sessions, and IT Team of Teams meetings, as well as other applicable events.
They lead regularly occurring ART synchronization routines, including scrum of scrums.
Additionally, they take steps necessary to stay informed on efforts in execution and organize and present ongoing delivery updates to stakeholders by way of solution demonstrations and other methods.
The RTE utilizes Azure DevOps to ensure all work is adequately documented so that quality metrics can be obtained.
They consistently adhere to Agile best practices and coach leaders and team members on Agile methods and mindsets.
Overall, the RTE promotes a culture of continuous improvement by leveraging Agile principles and techniques to increase collaboration, predictability, transparency, velocity, and value.
Guide the Agile Release Train
Partner with VP of IT to ensure successful delivery on divisional roadmap items
Work with planning managers and stakeholders to fully understand divisional roadmaps
Act as the nucleus of the ART by driving cross team IT coordination
Leverage feedback loops and Agile ceremonies to identify and navigate any challenges that are impeding the flow of work
Track the progression of ongoing work items and keep stakeholders up to date on delivery milestones
Deliver Value
Ensure IT efforts remain aligned with divisional roadmaps throughout delivery cycle
Recognize and resolve problems independently
Interact frequently with stakeholders to fully understand priorities
Help to translate roadmaps into actionable projects including requirements gathering, epic aggregation and feature estimation
Actively participate in IT planning efforts and lead ongoing ART synchronization events and routines
Coordinate across Agile delivery teams to ensure appropriate team alignment
Closely monitor in flight roadmap items and ensure work is progressing appropriately
Agile Maturity
Champion Agile maturity across the organization to help increase the frequency, predictability, and quality of services delivered to our customers
Provide leadership by modeling excellence in high productivity, strong work ethic, and positive interactions with others
Act as a thought leader; seek out opportunities to increase efficiency and productivity
Consistently adhere to Agile best practices and coach leaders and team members on Agile methods and mindsets
Reporting
Utilize Azure DevOps and other tools to develop, refine, and present customizable reports, roadmaps, and dashboards for stakeholders and IT
Ensure ADO usage is aligned with established best practices including work documentation and status tracking
Maintain detailed knowledge of work efforts impacting their assigned area and effectively communicate status updates to stakeholders and IT leaders
Relationship Management
Communicate with business stakeholders frequently to ensure priorities are consistently aligned
Provide transparency to stakeholders on scope, schedule and resource constraints
Develop and maintain strong relationships with VP of IT, Stakeholders, Planning Managers, Product Owners, Scrum Masters, Project Managers, Business Systems Analysts, Architects, and Agile Delivery Teams to enable the successful delivery of work
