Germanna Community College is a public, open access institution of higher education in the Virginia Community College System. The College is a dynamic learning organization that serves as a Germanna regional leader and preferred partner where quality learning experiences enable students to participate effectively in the social, economic, political, intellectual, and cultural life of their communities. Germanna Community College is centrally located in Fredericksburg, VA between Washington D.C. and Richmond and between the Blue Ridge mountains and the Chesapeake Bay. Full of history, the area offers a community rich with diversity, the arts, technology, vineyards, hiking, canoeing/kayaking, and many other activities.
Germanna Community College is seeking to hire a part-time Germanna Career Advisor to assist King George High School students and their families interested in workforce (Trades) career training or post-secondary education at Germanna Community College. The Career Advisor plans and executes outreach and workforce career education activities at King George High School on behalf of the College. The Career Advisor offers a one-stop service that facilitates a student from application to enrollment in the workforce program courses at Germanna Community College. This position works closely with departments across the College and organizations within the community.
The Career Advisor serves as an ambassador for the College and cultivates strong relationships with prospective students, parents/families, high school personnel, and area employers.
The Career Advisor advises and counsels high school students and other student populations, as needed, on post-secondary workforce graduation goals, specifically exploring the benefits of Germanna Community College enrollment through in person, e-mail, text messages, social media, and other forms of electronic communication, and phone engagement. This position coordinates on-campus tours, enrollment programs, and college and career-oriented activities targeted towards prospective students and their parents/families. The Career Advisor coordinates the ongoing strategic communications to prospective students and maintains a case management system to report outcomes to the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) and the College.
The Career Advisor also assists King George High School's Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs. The Career Advisor assists in prospective Germanna student recruitment, enrollment and registration of new and continuing students, and the facilitation of workforce course expansion at their respective area high school. The Career Advisor works collaboratively as a part of a team including the KGHS Director of Counseling, King George County School's Work-Based Learning Specialist, and the current KGHS Rappahannock Community College Career Advisor (RCC Dual Enrollment) on site at King George High School to address the career development and post-secondary education needs of King George High School students
*This position is located in Virginia. Must reside within a reasonable commuting distance or be willing to relocate to ensure consistent, reliable attendance.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
Experience in a higher education setting
Extensive computer experience with familiarity with word processing, spreadsheets, and database software tools
Extensive customer service experience with an ability to handle stressful situations
Experience working with high school students
A valid driver's license with the ability to travel throughout service area
Excellent oral and written communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Ability to problem solve in a fast-paced environment with a diverse student population
Knowledge of career assessments and career and educational pathway planning
Knowledge of K-12 and/or higher education enrollment services, academic advising, career advising, or counseling.
Ability to understand and interpret college policies and academic placement procedures
Ability to handle confidential information
Ability to advise and assist students with career and academic decision making
Ability to effectively collaborate with school personnel, as well as community representatives and employers
Ability to maintain accurate and timely record keeping and reporting
Experience with or willingness to learn artificial intelligence tools. Additional Considerations
