The academic advisor assists students to attain their educational goals by constructing meaningful educational plans, through frequent personal contacts and supportive communication which promote holistic development, leading to successful completion of degree requirements and timely graduation from Mercy College of Ohio. Must be able to maintain consistent contact with students using a variety of communication methods, work with diverse populations, and appreciate the challenges faced by students. The role of the academic advisor requires a working knowledge of current best practices in advising, as well as applicable accreditation and applicable standards.
Guides and counsels students towards career and personal development
Assists students with the selection of all courses and registration and scheduling processes
Monitors student progress reviewing records for progression (prerequisites) and graduation requirements
Clarifies academic requirements and policies pertinent to program of study
Provides guidance to and referrals for students to appropriate services available on campus as indicated by student need
Participates in open, professional communications between department members, Program Chairs, faculty, and staff, keeping appropriate staff informed of any issues related to performance of job duties
