Position Overview

The Head of Academics is a key leadership role responsible for ensuring academic excellence across the school. This individual will lead instructional strategy, oversee curriculum design and implementation, manage assessment systems, and cultivate a culture of high-quality teaching and learning. The Head of Academics must be well-versed in Delaware's educational standards, including the Delaware Performance Appraisal System (DPAS-II), and bring deep expertise in instructional coaching and classroom observations.

Key Responsibilities

Instructional Leadership

Develop and oversee the school's academic vision, ensuring alignment with Delaware content standards and BASSE's mission.

Monitor instructional practices across grade levels through a system of regular, targeted classroom observations and walkthroughs.

Lead the implementation of DPAS-II, including training, observation, feedback, documentation, and summative evaluations in alignment with state requirements.

Ensure that curriculum and instruction reflect culturally responsive, student-centered, and inquiry-based approaches.

Facilitate the use of data to drive instructional planning, differentiation, and continuous improvement. Teacher Support and Professional Development

Support the recruitment, development, and retention of high-quality educators.

Provide ongoing coaching, feedback, and professional development to improve teacher practice and student outcomes.

Lead professional learning communities and workshops focused on instructional best practices, equity, and growth-oriented feedback.

Serve as the lead evaluator for instructional staff under the DPAS-II framework, ensuring compliance and effectiveness. Academic Program Oversight

Supervise curriculum development and academic planning, ensuring rigor and relevance across all subjects.

Oversee assessment systems, both formative and summative, to ensure meaningful progress monitoring and intervention strategies.

Collaborate with school leaders to support interventions for struggling learners and enrichment for advanced students.

Ensure adherence to all relevant Delaware Department of Education (DDOE) regulations and reporting requirements. Day-to-Day Academic Operations

?Lead the daily academic operations of the school, including oversight of instructional schedules, classroom coverage, assessments, academic interventions, and teacher support systems.

?Collaborate with operations staff to ensure academic systems run efficiently (e.g., testing coordination, grading cycles, professional development scheduling).

?Serve as the go-to leader for academic troubleshooting, ensuring smooth instructional delivery and support throughout the school day.

School Culture and Leadership

Model BASSE's values and promote a learning environment that is affirming, inclusive, and academically driven.

Collaborate with the Executive Director and leadership team on strategic planning, scheduling, and resource allocation.

Serve as a key liaison between academic staff, school leadership, families, and community partners. Qualifications

Deep commitment to BASSE's mission of equity, community engagement, and educational excellence.

Master's degree in Education, Curriculum & Instruction, Educational Leadership, or related field (required).

Delaware certification as a School Leader (or eligibility to obtain) strongly preferred.

At least 5 years of teaching experience and 3+ years in a school or instructional leadership role.

Extensive experience with classroom observations and conducting evaluations using DPAS-II.

Demonstrated success in improving instructional quality and student achievement.

Expertise in curriculum design, instructional coaching, and data-informed leadership.

Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Experience working in a charter school or innovative school setting preferred.
