Role Overview

As a Lead Systems Safety Engineer, you are responsible for ensuring that our robot is safe, from design and implementation to test and validation. You will own safety case development, requirements generation, architecture development, and ultimately verification & validation for an autonomous last-mile delivery robot. You will work across many teams and disciplines to ensure the safety of a complex robotic system by breaking high-level safety cases into actionable strategies and methods for design, development, and test throughout the organization.

Responsibilities

Lead interdisciplinary teams to analyze product features, define corresponding safe behaviors, and demonstrate those behaviors are exhibited as intended

Define verifiable safety requirements and quantitative safety metrics based on risk analysis that can be measured at scale with data and simulation for both the autonomy software and the hardware platform

Lead cross-functional teams to generate innovative safety concepts, and ensure safety architecture and requirements are aligned across the organization

Define and implement creative safety architecture and validation solutions for a drive stack that incorporates machine learning based solutions

Drive safety analysis with teams across multiple domains, including hardware, software, and autonomy teams

Promote a culture of safety within the organization and provide training and guidance on safety best practices Qualifications

B.S. in Mechanical, Electrical, Software or equivalent engineering field

8+ years of experience in the design and test of complex electromechanical and/or robotic systems

Experience with systems engineering fundamentals, particularly safety engineering methodologies such as HARA, safety concept and requirements development, and safety verification & validation

Experience with test scripting and data analysis languages (e.g. Python and SQL)

Experience in data analysis of test results including probability and statistical analysis techniques

Hands-on approach to the design and test of safety-critical electromechanical systems

Fundamental knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and software engineering

Experience with safety analysis methodologies (HAZOP, FMEA, FTA, DFA) and safety standards (ISO 26262, ISO/PAS 8800, etc.)

Excellent written and verbal communication skills to guide teams on safety concepts and develop clear safety argumentation What Makes You Standout

M.S., or Ph.D in Mechanical, Electrical, Software or equivalent engineering field

Experience in one or more of the following industries: automotive, medical, aerospace, robotics

Experience in autonomous systems and/or mobile robotics

Experience working in Unix/Linux environments
