Job Description:
The Academic Counselor 2 (AC2) in the College of Science (CoS) will provide academic advising to undergraduate students majoring within the College of Science. The College of Science (CoS) houses 5 academic departments, with 8 majors including applied data science, biochemistry, biological sciences, chemistry, geology, mathematics, microbiology and physics. The AC2 will assist with College of Science initiatives focused in enhancing students’ academic success and retention.
Job Duties
60% Academic Advising: Provides academic counseling to undergraduate SCI majors. The includes but is not limited to course scheduling, study abroad enrollment, interpretation of college and university policies, adding/changing minors & concentrations, IDL/ODL courses, credit exams forms, and student academic plans for financial aid appeals.
20% Coordinates academic services and programs to assist with college and university retention efforts targeting CoS students identified as high priority such as midterm calls for students with low grades, unregistered students, CoS admissible students, incoming call project, etc.
10% Coordinates academic advising training, provides curricula updates, and assists with enrollment requests for academic units responsible for on boarding and scheduling incoming and current freshmen.
5% Participates in all college programs such as College of Science Commencement Ceremonies, Honors Convocation, and welcome week, block party and other events.
Attends and participates in professional development.
5% Performs other duties as assigned by Assistant Dean of Student Services
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree
1 year of related experience

Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in counseling, Social Work, or related behavioral science discipline
Three years of experience in an academic advising setting at a higher education institution
Experience in Academic or Career Counseling in a university setting, excellent human relations skills and proficient writing ability
Experience with student academic success or tracking programs
Special Qualifications
As with all LSU employees, academic counselors have an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.
