Position Description

ENTRY SALARY: $47,718.96

Under general supervision, the Storm Water Heavy Equipment Operator performs skilled work in the operation and use of heavy equipment for use in various construction, maintenance, and stormwater management activities.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Drives, uses, and operates large equipment including loaders, excavators, back hoes, and other heavy motorized machines; uses equipment to assist, support, and help various crews with activities, jobs, and projects.

Operates, maintains, and uses slope mowers, flat mowers, and brush cut equipment to perform various construction maintenance tasks; skillfully uses a front end loader to load, unload, and move various materials.

Drives a dump truck to and from job sites and other areas within the City; hauls concrete, asphalt, dirt, and other materials; ensures materials are handled, moved, and disposed of in the appropriate way.

Activates controls to dump refuse into piles, containers, or dump trucks; operates low boy, hauling equipment, and trailers; adheres to storage, dumping, and safety standards; performs skills with professionalism and completes tasks with competency and efficiency.

Uses excavators and operates excavating equipment with professional skill; digs out various construction areas, performs extensive clearing, cleaning, and material moving for ponds, ditches, swales, and other necessary areas.

Performs routine safety and pre/post operational checks on equipment to include monitoring and maintenance of oil, fluids, coolant, filters, lights, brooms, greasing all bearings and fittings, changing out brooms and washing unit daily.

Wears proper personal protective equipment; understands and applies all safety and hazard precautions, regulations and protocols.

Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications

Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:

A valid State driver's license is required.

Forklift License within 90 days of hire.

Tanker Endorsement within 90 days of hire

Does this position require a Commercial Driver's License? Yes

Type: Possession of Class B CDL with necessary endorsements based on area of assignment. Obtain and maintain a Class A-5 within 1 year of hire date. This position is required to operate the below equipment, machines, tools, and other work aides:

Trucks (dump), roll-off trucks, slope mower, front end loader, bulldozer, backhoe, track hoe, skid-steer loaders, excavators, trenchers, shovels, rakes, hammers, post hole diggers, all hand tools and other power and manual tools and equipment required to perform the work including proper personal protective gear.

The employee must have construction knowledge, be able to demonstrate equipment operation and have a good working knowledge of most construction duties and responsibilities. Basic computer skills for communicating via email and for utilizing the City's intranet system and GIS to obtain information is highly desirable and is a necessary skill to learn prior to qualifying for internal promotional opportunities.

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma, High School Equivalency or G.E.D. Certificate PLUS two (2) years of experience in the operation of the appropriate heavy equipment or related equipment used in stormwater construction and maintenance activities; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
