This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with Benefits.
This Position is located at Tarheel Challenge Academy (TCA) in New London, NC and receives direction and guidance from the Lead Instructor. The purpose of this position is to create a safe environment for students to learn by appropriately planning, developing and providing instruction and assessment activities for TCA Cadets, establishing and maintaining Cadet academic records, and preparing and submitting Cadet academic awards recommendations. Position will also identify, request and manage all course materials required for instruction to Cadets, identify opportunities to reinforce subject material and learning experiences with other activities, and identify classrooms, facilities, or materials which facilitate the learning process. Position is also responsible for identifying, developing and administering assessment tools as well as develop personalized lesson plans to meet the requirements of the curriculum. Person is expected to use visual aids such as PowerPoint presentations, videos, charts, graphs & maps to reinforce learning. Position will assist with transport and supervision of Cadets when participating in offsite TCA activities such as educational field trips and offsite SAT testing, as well as assist with medical transport. Other duties include attending career and college fairs with cadets, assisting during orientation and registration, assisting with Life Skills classes, and assisting with administration of the TABE test.

The salary grade for this position is NC08. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.
About the Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy:
The Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy (TCA) is a quasi-military style resident program for at risk youth in the ages of 16-18. Sponsored by the North Carolina National Guard, the TCA mission is to redirect the efforts of young adults who have had trouble succeeding in the normal high school environment. The intent is to give them the skills and attitude to become productive citizens in their communities. The Academies are located in two different locations: Salemburg and New London, North Carolina. It is a 17-month program divided into two distinct phases: a five-month in-residence phase at the academies, and a twelve-month post-residential phase immediately following graduation for the in-residence phase. TCA seeks to improve the life and future employment potential of its cadets by concentrating on eight core components which are: Life Coping Skills, Academic Excellence, Responsible Citizenship, Job Skills, Service to Community, Health and Hygiene, Physical Fitness, and Leadership/Followership.

To qualify for this position, applicants must demonstrate ALL of the following KSAs:
Experience engaging and motivating students.
Experience maintaining accurate student records, preparing effective lesson plans, utilizing data to develop lessons and skills to use educational technology in classroom instruction.
Experience in effective educational practices for teaching adult/youth students.
Experience effectively communicating to both students and colleagues.
Utilizing behavioral management techniques and managing classroom behavior.Necessary Special Qualifications and Requirements:
Required to complete the following training provided by TCA: Basic Course; CPR (recertify every two years); Hands off policy training. Must become certified to instruct required subjects by the Community College in accordance with guidelines in place at the time of hire.
Per 5 CFR 731, upon appointment, applicant must be able to obtain a favorable suitability and determination from a Tier I background investigation conducted by the Office of Personnel Management. Failure to obtain a favorable determination may result in termination of employment.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Military Experience
