Overview

The City of Louisville invites motivated, hard-working, and collaborative individuals to apply for our Engineering Technician full time position. Performs office and field engineering and paraprofessional engineering work related to Public Works projects and assignments which will include but not be limited to CAD drafting, street and utility design, records preparation, field survey, and construction inspection. Will interpret civil engineering construction plans and utility maps.

Examples of Duties

Develops and prepares preliminary engineering reports, plans and specifications for a wide variety of utility and transportation infrastructure projects, including sewer and water mains, drainage facilities, and streets.

Performs preliminary design calculations for estimating construction quantities and designing line, grade and alignment of utility and transportation infrastructure projects.

Assists lead Construction Inspector with inspections, daily quantity reports, and punch list preparation.

Watch and analyze concrete being poured and conduct field inspection work during summer months.

Develops, prepares and/or reviews and updates utility and transportation infrastructure maps.

Maintains and preserves public works records; drafts as-built records of projects and infrastructure; documents changes for operation and maintenance programs such as GIS and AutoCAD.

Makes field checks of project sites; evaluates area to verify site survey results; participates in survey work.

Performs construction inspection to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.

Researches records, maps, and other information to obtain typical engineering data such as location of easements, sewer stubs, water mains, hydrants, property special assessments, etc.

Drafts detailed dimensional drawings such as street, water, sewer, drainage and other utility plans, systems, and projects.

Reviews and recommends approval of shop drawings and submittals for compliance with project material specifications.

Performs office-related functions including preparing correspondence, maps, presentation materials, brochures, field notes, printing materials, answering phones and responding to inquiries from contractors, developers, property owners, staff and the general public; prepares and maintains records, files and reports as required.

Assists with coordination of office and field engineering tasks with other City departments and outside agencies.

Creates charts for statistical data representation; completes finished designs and calculations from sketches.

Uses computer assisted drafting (AutoCAD) equipment and software.

Reviews and issues right-of-way permits and monitors permits for compliance.

Reviews and approves traffic control plans (MHT) related to permits.

Assists with review of Building Tap Fee calculations.

May prepare pay applications for capital improvement projects.

Performs related work as required and assigned.

General Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by completion of college level courses in engineering (civil engineering preferred), computer aided drafting (AutoCAD), and surveying plus

Two (2) years engineering experience; or any equivalent combination of relevant training, education, and experience as determined by the City of Louisville.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Intermediate or above working knowledge AutoCAD.

Intermediate working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.

Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of civil engineering related to water distribution, sewer collection, storm drainage, and street geometrics.

Knowledge of basic mathematics, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.

Working knowledge of GIS preferred.

Skill in gathering data and making accurate engineering computations from the data.

Ability to communicate effectively with employees, contractors, and the public.

Ability to make accurate, neat, and legible drawings.

Ability to communicate clearly and follow written and oral instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Ability to read maps, legal descriptions, and other legal documents.

Ability to read and understand property level description, land survey plats, and planned unit development plans.Pre-employment Screening: An offer of employment is contingent on the successful completion of a criminal background check. Additional Information

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, work is performed in an office environment and outside in all types of weather conditions. There is some exposure to fumes or airborne particles.

The noise level in the office work environment is usually low, while the noise level in the outside environment is moderate to loud. Approximately 50% of the job functions will be performed in an office environment, but will vary greatly depending on the needs of the department.

Physical Requirements:

Incumbent is regularly required to talk or hear, and is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, instruments, or controls and reach with hand and arms. Occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
