GENERAL DISCRIPTION
As the BI Engineering Manager, you will own key analytics functions to make Crane a more effective, efficient enterprise. This includes establishing a shared reality for the enterprise, by maintaining core datasets in our data warehouse; defining a common scoreboard and enabling feedback loops via consistent, reliable metrics; enabling core business teams by building and refining a product portfolio of dashboards & operational tools; and ensuring excellence in technical execution, by managing a team of Business Intelligence Engineers.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Key responsibilities will include:
Maintaining key relationships, by running or attending stakeholder calls with each of the core BI domains
Ensuring tactical engineering decisions are sound, through design reviews and design standards
This does *not* include reviewing every PR. While you should review a sample of PRs to keep a pulse on team progress and check quality, code reviews are an engineer responsibility
Coordinate the actions of the BI team by
Hosting regular stand-ups
Holding team members accountable for timely ticket/issue updates
Planning sprints and managing project capacity & pace
Build an effective engineering team by
Hiring skilled candidates
Setting regular 1:1s and following through on performance management with staff
Coordinate with engineering/development manager peers on cross-team projects
Set & execute strategic direction with the Director of Enterprise Analytics, including
Hiring & onboarding standards
Team capacity management
Cross-domain analytics strategy
Technical strategy, including data warehouse design, developer tooling, and BI engineer workflow design
You should *not* take on critical-path development items, but you should spend ~10-15% of time contributing fixes, minor features, and debugging. This will allow you to stay in tune with the developer experience and maintain a working knowledge of our enterprise data models.
The BI Engineering Manager role is effective when you empower the team to execute quickly and efficiently, with a common vision. While technical leadership is a core responsibility and hands-on skills are expected, this is not a developer role.
