Aspen is looking for a highly collaborative and service-oriented Controller to report to the CFO. This role requires technical expertise in GAAP accounting and reporting, proven leadership and guidance in formulating and executing strategic plans to ensure adherence to all pertinent regulations related to the company's financial success and growth ambitions. The ideal candidate has a can-do attitude paired with excellent communication and relationship building skills to cultivate strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders. This is an on-site role in Torrey Pines, CA, with limited flexibility to work from home. Relocation is not offered.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead the company’s controllership function, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting in compliance with established rules and regulations and to support FP&A and investor relations.
Oversee accounting functions (accounts receivable, accounts payable, general and technical accounting) including monthly and quarterly closings.
Oversee liquidity management and cash forecasting as well as development and implementation of treasury workflows and technology to support banking operations.
Ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and organizational laws, regulations, guidelines, and best practices, including but not limited to tax laws, accepted accounting principles (GAAP), federal acquisition regulations (FAR), SOX regulations and cost accounting standards (CAS) and reporting requirements. Drafts and implements policies and best practice procedures to create an effective internal control framework.
Work with external auditors and other 3rd party partners to lead the annual audit process, and annual 409A valuations. Monitors and identifies evolving accounting guidance and potential impact to company.
Oversee the preparation of tax compliance filings, external accounting disclosures and government reporting requirements. Develop and implement tax strategies to optimize the company's tax position and reduce tax liabilities.
Develop and manage a high-performing accounting team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence.
Develop and implement policies and procedures with an ongoing review for process improvements, automation, and standardization across finance operations.
Oversee the development, implementation, operation, maintenance, and control of essential financial accounting systems and information within the company.
Serves as a financial partner with various functions and departments to create value and support ongoing organizational needs and business processes.
Collaborate with FP&A and senior leadership to provide financial insights and reporting.
Directs the procurement function for the Company, including ensuring appropriate contract management.
Lead training and education and present to various stakeholders as needed.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting or related field with 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in accounting required, with a strong background in corporate controllership.
CPA required (or equivalent); an advanced degree is a plus. ”Big-4” audit experience required.
Experience in publicly traded biopharma/life sciences company required
IPO and private (VC) financing experience strongly preferred.
Expertise in U.S. GAAP, SEC reporting, consolidations, and SOX compliance required

The anticipated salary range for candidates who will work in San Diego is $235k to $275k annually. The final salary offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and length of experience within industry, education, etc.
