Summary / Objective
The Senior Refrigeration Applications Engineer is responsible for providing expert-level engineering support in the design, specification, and application of commercial and industrial refrigeration and HVAC systems. This role leads the development of advanced technical solutions from concept through construction, including system layouts, custom equipment design, energy management systems (EMS), and controls integration. The position plays a key role in cross-functional project coordination and ensures accurate, timely engineering documentation to support sales, construction, and service operations.
Essential Functions
Design and specify commercial and industrial refrigeration systems, including CO and glycol-based systems, low-temperature cascade systems, and centralized rack refrigeration.
Engineer HVAC and EMS control systems, focusing on efficiency, sustainability, and regulatory compliance.
Collaborate with internal teams, clients, contractors, architects, and consultants to define project requirements and develop system concepts.
Design and review equipment selections, system layouts, and schedules to meet performance specifications.
Review and redline construction and manufacturing drawings, perform load calculations, and prepare submittal packages.
Provide troubleshooting support and technical guidance during construction and commissioning phases.
Coordinate with vendors and manufacturers to confirm compatibility and performance of system components.
Attend project meetings, conduct field verifications, and provide on-site engineering support as needed.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry standards and codes (ASHRAE, IIAR, local regulations).
Contribute to continuous improvement of internal engineering practices, documentation, and tools. Qualifications & Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (required)
Professional Engineer (P.E.) license (preferred)
7-10 years of experience in refrigeration and HVAC system design, with at least 3 years in industrial refrigeration
Proficiency in thermodynamics, psychrometrics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer
Knowledge of ammonia and CO systems, compressor technologies, condensers, and evaporators
Familiarity with electrical systems including MCCs, VFDs, and control panel layouts
Understanding of EMS, PLC controls, and sequence of operations
Proficiency in AutoCAD, Microsoft Excel, and project management software
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
