QUALIFICATIONS:

Has the ability to assist in organizing and supervising a sports program.

Has previous coaching or athletic experience in assigned sport.

The assistant coach must have knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and be willing to learn new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.

The assistant coach must serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through his/her instructions and actions.

Must pay for and pass a background check.

CHSAA certification will be required after hire if not already certified (yearly certification and coach's tests). The school will cover this charge.

CPR/First Aid/AED certification will be required after hire, if not already certified (good for two years). The school will cover this charge.

Concussion certification will be required after hire if not already certified (yearly certification and coach's tests). The school will cover this charge.

REPORTS TO: The head coach and athletic director, who provide overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals.

SUPERVISES: May assist in supervising student managers, assistants, and statisticians as directed by the head coach.

JOB GOAL: To assist the head coach in instructing athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. To support the head coach in demonstrating behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment in the student athletes. To upgrade his/her knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, consultation, etc.

GENERAL:

The success of athletic programs has a strong influence on the community's image of the entire system. Public exposure is a considerable responsibility and community/parent pressure for winning performance is taxing but must not override the objectives of good sportsmanship and good mental health.

The position includes other unusual aspects such as extended time, risk injury factor and due process predicaments.

It is the express intent of this job description to give sufficient guidance to function. In cases not specifically covered, it shall be assumed that an assistant coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Has a thorough knowledge of all the athletic policies approved by the Custer County School District's Board of Education and assists in their implementation.

Has knowledge of existing system, state and league regulations and implements them consistently.

Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or grievances through proper channels. Is aware of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance.

STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists in implementing the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques as directed by the head coach.

Attends staff meetings and clinics as required.

Carries out specific duties as assigned by the head coach.

Helps maintain discipline and works to increase morale and cooperation.

Performs such other duties which may be assigned by the head coach or athletic director/principal.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES:

Assists the head coach and athletic director in scheduling, providing transportation and requirements for tournament and special sport events.

Helps in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times.

Assists in providing documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent and eligibility.

Helps provide proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serves as a mentor to each athlete to promote the development and demonstration in student athletes of the character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.

Assists in monitoring student athletes' grades and conduct.

By his/her presence at all practices, games and while traveling, provides assistance, guidance, and safeguards for each participant.

Helps enforce training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport for each athlete who is considered a participant.

Assists in implementing programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention and emergencies.

Helps complete paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries on proper forms and submits to the athletic office within 24 hours.

Assists in directing student managers, assistants and statisticians.

Supports the head coach in determining discipline and procedures concerning due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary.

FINANCE AND EQUIPMENT:

Assists in recommending equipment guidelines as to type, style, color or technical specifications.

Helps in operating within budget appropriations.

Assists in accounting for all equipment and collecting the cost of any equipment lost or not returned.

Helps in properly marking and identifying all equipment before issuing or storing.

Assists in monitoring equipment rooms and coaches' offices.

Helps ensure athletes are only in authorized areas of the building at the appropriate times.

Assists in examining locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on general cleanliness of the facility.

Helps secure all doors, lights, windows and locks before leaving the building if custodians are not on duty.

Supports the head coach in instilling in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use.

PUBLIC RELATIONS:

Assists the head coach in organizing parents, coaches, players and guests for preseason meetings.

Helps promote the sport within the school and supports the head coach in recruiting athletes who are not in another sports program.

COMPENSATION: Stipend paid out after sport season ends.
