Responsibilities include responding to calls and investigating complaints concerning stray or vicious animals; investigating animal cruelty; enforcing laws and ordinances; and other related tasks. Initiative is required in the effort to ensure that animal owners comply with regulations, and considerable judgment, firmness, and tact are necessary in dealing with the public. The employee is on-call to respond to dog bites and is subject to working in inside and outside environments and the risks involved in handling rabid or vicious animals. Independent judgment must be exercised in deciding what action to take if animals cannot be readily captured. Work is performed under general supervision and evaluated by observation, reports, and discussion for appropriate remediation results and satisfaction of the public.

The starting salary will be determined with consideration given to both the candidate's educational background and relevant work experience.
Must possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record per County policy.
This is a non-exempt position working 37.5 hours weekly/1950 hours annually.
Essential Functions
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
Responds to calls to investigate complaints, stray or vicious animals, owner surrendered pets; Enforces laws and ordinances; issues warnings or citations; obtains and issues warrants and testifies in court when necessary.
Maintain a relationship Emergency Services personnel, rescues, etc.
Supervise or conduct all chemical mobilization performed in the field.
Assists with finding lost pets.
Sets traps for stray or homeless animals
Assists in cleaning and maintaining animal shelter; feeds and waters animals.
Investigates reports of animal bites, and enforces laws requiring confinement of animals for observation.
Investigates cases of cruelty to animals, and recommends appropriate action; takes wounded animals to veterinarians for care.
Operates a pick-up truck and animal handling equipment; sets traps and cages to collect vicious animals; ensures proper maintenance of vehicle and equipment.
Assists the public with information and adoptions when needed; participates in public education programming.
Facilitates agreement among neighbors regarding complaints of nuisance animals.
Maintains completed records on activities.
May act in official capacity as Animal Control Officer to take wildlife as the conditions that are listed on the Wildlife Depredation Permit.
Performs related work as required.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Graduation from high school, and experience involving contact with the public and in handling and caring for animals; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Certifications and Licenses
Possession of a valid driver's license.
Ability to obtain and maintain National Animal Cruelty Investigation certification within 3 years.
Must complete FEMA IS100, IS200, IS700 and IS800 courses by end of probationary period.
Vaccination for Rabies may be required.
In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or Emergency Services Director, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to participate in exercises and regular preparedness training and may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different than hired position, work before, during or after an emergency which may include a change in normal or extended work hours or location.
Person County conducts pre-employment screening on candidates. Job offers are conditional pending the following:
A pre-employment drug screen for all candidates. Positions designated by Person County as Safety Sensitive are also subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
A background check for all candidates. Some positions also require a credit check.
Additional screening and testing required for some positions.
