Duties & Responsibilities
The English Language Program at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Global Education Office is seeking passionate and dedicated adjunct faculty to teach in our intensive English as a Second Language (ESL) program!
Summary:
The English Language Program (ELP) at Virginia Commonwealth University supports students who are academically qualified for undergraduate or graduate programs but need to strengthen their English proficiency to succeed in an academic setting.
We also welcome individuals looking to enhance their English skills for educational, professional, or personal growth—many of whom go on to pursue academic programs at VCU.
Typical Responsibilities:
This position reports directly to the Director of the English Language Program and includes, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities:
Teach one or more courses in the program;
Submit grade reports in accordance with program requirements;
Hold scheduled office hours (as listed in the syllabus) to meet with students;
Attend and actively participate in team meetings.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in TESOL or a related field, or a Master’s degree with a TESOL Certificate
Experience teaching English as a Second Language at an accredited university
Demonstrated fluency in English at a native or near-native level
Proven cross-cultural sensitivity and awareness
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
Preferred Qualifications
Two or more years of experience teaching in an academic preparation intensive university ESL program in the United States
Demonstrated excellence in teaching a range of language skills and proficiency levels to college-bound students
Experience with intensive English language program assessment, including student placement and curriculum development
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Proficiency with educational technology and digital tools
