Main Purpose of Job

The Skilled Trades Specialist IV is responsible for the daily uninterrupted operation of the Department of Juvenile Services facilities, and handles Maintenance duties such as HVAC, lighting, plumbing and preventative maintenance. The Skilled Trades Specialist IV may also handle new construction, installations, alterations, renovations, painting, as well as repairs of facility equipment, electrical work and grounds maintenance/snow removal in order to maintain the facility, ensuring the safety and security of the youth and the staff.

POSITION DUTIES

The Skilled Trades Specialist IV position duties include, but are not limited to:

-Performing maintenance and repairs for all building systems to maintain the facility.

-Installing, repairing and maintaining plumbing systems.

-Performing maintenance and repairs on various electrical equipment and fixtures.

-Performs road repair and walkways.

-Applying plaster to walls and ceilings, repairing damaged surfaces and performing concrete work on various structures.

-Prepares interior and exterior surfaces for painting.

-Operates central air conditioning plants and equipment, conducts safety inspections of boilers and provides oversight to the cleaning, repair and maintenance of furnaces and boilers.

-Providing year-round outside grounds maintenance for DJS facilities to maintain a safe and properly manicured property -Assisting in the relocation of furniture and other equipment necessary to provide the proper environment of occupants at various buildings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency

certificate.

Experience: Five years of experience performing skilled trade work in plumbing, carpentry, electrical, HVAC, locksmith, masonry, painting, or welding work.

Note:

1. Candidates may substitute additional years of experience for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher, as a non-commissioned officer in utilities classifications or mechanical maintenance management specialty codes in utility systems repair, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Carries out repairs to buildings as a Skilled Trades Specialist IV. Exhibits the ability to

interpret and analyze specific instructions provided by the supervising Maintenance Supervisor

IV for minor repairs.

2. Performs the Preventive Maintenance plan as instructed for the facility plant operation in

accordance with all required repairs.

3. Performs all responsibilities assigned by the supervising Maintenance Supervisor IV; exhibits

skills necessary to operate all maintenance tools.

4. Performs emergency repairs.

5. Performs functions as related to Logistics Control.

6. Performs proper operation of all State owned vehicles and ground equipment in accordance

with all DJS policies.

7. Daily record keeping to ensure compliance with DJS and ACA standards.

8. Responds to the facility when instructed to complete repairs and for weather related facility operations.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

2. Employees in this classification who perform electrical work and are assigned to facilities that mandate licensed electricians must possess a current license as a Master Electrician or other appropriate electrician license from a local board or from the Maryland State Board of Master Electricians, 500 N. Calvert Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21202-3651.

3. Employees in this classification who perform work as a plumber must possess a Maryland Journeyman/Gas Fitter License.
