Description
This position accompanies a solid waste collection truck on an assigned route to assist in the collection of solid waste and recyclables.
Major Duties
Accompanies a truck along an assigned route to collect solid waste and recyclables.
Transfers the contents of garbage/recyclable containers or yard waste piles into collection vehicles.
Directs collection vehicles as needed during unloading at the landfill, transfer station, or recyclable recovery facility.
Operates vector control spray trucks on a nightly schedule.
Performs cutting and clearing operations to allow for the collection of items.
Collects and disposes of dead animals.
Performs roadside litter collection duties.
Performs equipment safety inspections; performs minor equipment maintenance; notifies supervisors of maintenance or repair needs; cleans vehicle.
Performs related duties.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures.
Knowledge of city streets and geography.
Skill in the operation of solid waste collection equipment.
Skill in providing customer services.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Environmental Services Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with establishes procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
The work consists of related solid waste collection duties. Inclement weather and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the position.
The purpose of this position is to assist in the collection and transport of solid waste and recyclables. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of solid waste collection services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed while intermittently standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must distinguish between shades of color.
The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and offensive odors. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggle, or gloves.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from a standard senior-high school or GED equivalent, as recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) or Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA); and
Six (6) months paid work experience with heavy manual labor.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of valid operator driver license with an acceptable driving record (PBA 9/10/01).
An applicant for this position is subject to various background investigations up to and including a criminal, credit, past employment, and reference checks.
Employees are required to submit to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with the City of Dothan policy, which includes pre-employment and ransom tests for the duration of employment in this position. (PBA 8/13/12)
