Description
The Electric Lineworker, Arborist, and Traffic Technician Apprentice Internship is an entry-level,
hands-on learning opportunity. Apprentices will rotate through experiences assisting with electric
line construction, urban forestry maintenance, and traffic systems installation and repair. Work
involves learning industry best practices, preparing materials and equipment, operating
machinery, and supporting crews in the field. This position is designed to prepare the Apprentice
for a future career in utility, arborist, or traffic systems operations.
SUPERVISION
Work is performed under the direct supervision of a Line Supervisor, Arborist Supervisor, or
Traffic Supervisor, depending on assignment. Work may be performed in adverse weather
conditions and is reviewed for understanding, accuracy, completeness, and adherence to
policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF WORK
Electric Linework:
Assist with the installation, maintenance, and repair of underground and overhead
electrical lines.
Install transformers, street lights, reclosers, fuses, and related electrical equipment.
Operate bucket trucks, digger derricks, backhoes, forklifts, and hand/power tools.
Climb poles and elevated structures safely.
Arborist Operations:
Assist with tree trimming, removal, and planting activities to maintain safe clearance
around electrical lines and public areas.
Operate chippers, chainsaws, pruning tools, and other forestry equipment.
Learn tree species identification, health assessment, and proper pruning techniques.
Maintain tools and equipment in safe, operational condition.
Traffic Technician Work:
Assist with the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals and signs.
Set up traffic control devices and assist in safe work zone practices.
Operate basic tools and equipment such as drills, wire strippers/crimpers, etc.
Learn basic traffic signal wiring and troubleshooting under supervision.
General Duties:
Prepare and stock trucks with necessary tools, parts, and supplies.
Complete routine maintenance and cleaning of trucks, trailers, and equipment.
Accurately complete required reports for material usage and maintenance records.
Perform groundwork and site cleanup to maintain a safe and organized work
environment.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK
Enrollment in high school or equivalent combination of training and experience.
General knowledge of occupational hazards and workplace safety practices.
Basic knowledge of the safe and correct use of tools and equipment related to electric,
forestry, and traffic operations.
Willingness to learn to climb poles, trees, and operate various aerial and lifting devices.
Ability to work under extreme weather conditions.
Physical ability to meet the strenuous demands of climbing, lifting, digging, and other
fieldwork.
Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
Ability to properly use power tools, hand tools, and operate heavy equipment.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers,
supervisors, and the public.
Interest or basic knowledge in electrical theory, arboriculture, and/or traffic systems a
plus.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid driver’s license.
