Position OverviewThe Office of International Support Services (ISS) is seeking a pool of applicants to fill multiple positions on our student Orientation Leadership (OL) Team to assist, as needed, with the new international student orientation programs, including welcoming new students, assisting with essential check-in processes, leading orientation groups, and engaging with other campus welcome events. Attendance at pre-orientation training sessions and the entire orientation program is mandatory.

For the Fall 2025 semester, the International Student Orientation will be held in August, which both Undergraduate and Graduate students are required to attend. All OLs are expected to be available for full days throughout the duration of the orientation program, i.e., to be available to work between 8 AM and 7 PM. While most OLs will be assigned primary responsibilities as group leaders, some may be offered a position with primary team responsibilities, including administrative assistance.

Orientation Team members selected for the Fall 2025 program may be extended the option to work during the Spring semester orientation in January 2026.

Time Commitment:

Up to 40 hours per week (but typically less than 40 hours)

All orientation leaders must attend pre-orientation training. These mandatory training sessions will be scheduled between July 28th and August 1st. Exact dates will be determined later.

Orientation and campus welcome events: August 4 - 13, 2025 (as needed)

50% Facilitation and Coordination

Promote, encourage, and foster community through participant attendance at Orientation and other campus welcome sessions, activities, and events.

Help students complete their ISS and other required campus check-in processes.

Attend information sessions with participants and conduct follow-up group discussions.

Attend social activities, including evening and weekend events (as needed). You may be expected to work 3-4 hours during the weekend of Aug 9/Aug 10.

Set up and manage a GroupMe account for your assigned team during your employment, ensuring you send timely reminders. You will also be responsible for relaying important information as instructed by supervisory staff.

Facilitate small group sessions (up to 30 people), including leading icebreaker activities, participating in various panel discussions, presenting informational and cultural adjustment topics, and organizing campus tours.

Assist with the setup and cleanup of meeting and event facilities before and after events.

Be available for general assistance, answer questions, and make referrals as applicable.

Capture photos and videos for ISS social media platforms and upload them daily to the OL Teams Channel.

40% Training and Preparation

Attend mandatory pre-orientation training sessions.

You will receive training and preparation to manage unforeseen situations, emergencies, and prevalent challenges that may arise during orientation programs

Plan, organize, and prepare to participate in the panel discussions and facilitate icebreakers according to the established event timeline shared with you during this training.

Prepare interactive and engaging presentations for small group discussions aimed at new international students in both graduate and undergraduate programs.

Throughout the training, you will support the staff in preparing for various social events scheduled during orientation.

Familiarize yourself with the event schedule, various student appointments (e.g., ISS check-in, advising, health check-in, etc.), and the tasks you are responsible for during your assigned schedule.

Regularly check the OL Teams channel to stay connected with your supervisor, check your schedule, and access your training materials.

Assist the ISS Orientation staff with printing flyers, planning social activities, creating international music playlists, and assembling welcome packets.

10% Other Duties as assigned

Perform related tasks as directed by the ISS supervisory staff.Required Qualifications

Completion of one academic year (fall and spring semester) of full-time study at KU by the end of Spring 2025; the most recent semester of which must include regular KU academic courses (not AEC or Continuing Education classes).

Cumulative university-level Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 2.75, or a 2.75 current GPA in the most recently completed semester of full-time regular academic coursework at KU (not AEC or Continuing Education classes).

Communicate effectively in English (both spoken and written), as evidenced by application materials.

At least one semester of active participation in campus and/or community organizations, activities, or programs, as evidenced by application materials, either while a student at KU or while attending another college or university.

Have no other employment or commitments that limit or conflict with your availability to work a flexible schedule as prescribed by the orientation program's needs.

Have proper work authorization for on-campus employment during the period of this appointment.Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience as an International Student Orientation participant and/or orientation volunteer.

At least one semester in a leadership role at the university level in an organization, committee, or living group, or a comparable position demonstrating leadership qualities and abilities.

Ability to relate effectively with people from all cultures as demonstrated by a history of meaningful personal interaction within a social, living, working, or academic environment.

Experience speaking/making presentations in front of groups.

Experience studying, working, or living abroad.

Fluency in language(s) other than English.Position RequirementsDuring the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).Employment Conditions(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.Additional Candidate Instructions
