Job Description

Job Title: Senior Network Engineer

Job Summary

The Senior Network Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, optimization, and support of enterprise-wide network infrastructures across internal, external, cloud, wireless, and virtual environments. This role leads network assessments, redesigns, and integration of new technologies to ensure the environment remains secure, high-performing, and scalable. The engineer works within regulatory frameworks, ensures compliance with federal and IRS-specific standards, and collaborates across departments to maintain seamless operations. This position also supports project delivery, documentation, and technical leadership for CI’s complex networking needs.

Key Responsibilities

Design and Improve Network Infrastructure

Plan, build, and optimize CI’s network—spanning internal, external, cloud, wireless, and virtual environments—to ensure strong performance, security, and reliability. Lead redesign projects based on quarterly assessments, managing scope, timelines, and compliance needs.

Assess and Report on Network Health

Conduct Quarterly Network and Security Assessments, Technology Comparison Reports, and Hardware/Software Inventories to support strategic planning and system improvements.

Manage Upgrades, Patching, and Compliance

Develop and implement upgrade and patch schedules across all networking components. Respond to vulnerabilities, ensure timely fixes, and follow CSIRC and CI change protocols. Support FISMA High and federal compliance efforts, including Annual Security Controls Assessments (ASCA) and POAM resolutions.

Use and Maintain Monitoring & Diagnostic Tools

Deploy and manage tools like Cisco ACI, DNA, ISE; Forescout; HPNA; Infoblox; LiveAction; and Wireshark to monitor systems, troubleshoot issues, and improve visibility into network performance.

Support and Maintain Network Hardware

Provide full support for routers, switches, wireless access points, firewalls, DNS, DHCP, load balancers, and other physical/virtual components. Use Aruba Airwave and CAD diagrams for wireless heatmapping and AP placement. Identify and replace unmanaged switches with secure alternatives.

Coordinate Network Deployments

Oversee the shipping, configuration, and installation of network equipment at CI’s field locations, ensuring consistency and security in every deployment.

Handle Support and Change Requests

Troubleshoot incidents and resolve issues, documenting all actions through CI’s ticketing and change management systems. Review and approve firewall, proxy, and connectivity changes to maintain secure and aligned architecture.

Document and Share Knowledge

Keep technical documentation, SOPs, and network diagrams up to date. Store and organize deliverables in shared libraries for easy access and review. Provide training and knowledge transfer for new implementations.

Lead Projects and Collaborate with Teams

Manage Agile projects using Jira, including planning (WBS, risk logs, admin guides) and progress reporting. Collaborate across teams and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in computer engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.

5 + years of senior-level network engineering experience in enterprise environments.

Ability to obtain a Public Trust Clearance

Active certifications required:

Expertise in wired, wireless, virtual, and cloud networking across geographically dispersed locations.

Proficiency in Cisco, Fortinet, and other enterprise networking technologies, including firewall and load balancer management (e.g., F5, DNS round robin).

Strong background in regulatory compliance (e.g., NIST, DISA STIGs, IRS and federal mandates).

Hands-on experience with enterprise tools such as Cisco DNA Center, Wireshark, Aruba Airwave, Infoblox, and others.

Solid understanding of Agile project management frameworks and tools (e.g., Jira).

Strong documentation, analytical, and communication skills.
