Job Summary:

Responsible for answering all emergency and non-emergency incoming calls to the UMMC police department via telephone or radio. Dispatchers must be able to receive and relay information to appropriate units/areas and/or dispatch personnel to calls for service

Education & Experience

Associate's degree in security or related field or equivalent combination of education/experience.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration required:

MS Board on Emergency Telecommunications Standards and Training : within 1 year of hire

Valid Driver's License: prior to hire

CPR/First Aid Course: within 1 year of hire

NCIC: within 90 days of hire

FEMA ICS 100, 200, 700, 800 Courses: within 90 days of hire

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of two-way radio communications systems. Skill in the use of computers and related software applications. Verbal communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to obtain relevant information. Ability to prioritize incoming information and react calmly in emergency situations. Dispatchers must be clear spoken and understandable. Must maintain contact with all units on assignment; maintain status and location of field units; enter, update, and retrieve information on wanted persons, stolen property, vehicle registration and other information from statewide computer networks. Must exercise good judgment and make sound decisions in emergency situations, effectively communicate with and elicit information from upset and irate parties. Must be able to take and relay messages and perform related duties and assignments. Dispatchers must be able to exercise independent judgment and work with minimum supervision.

Responsibilities

Answer incoming telephone calls on a multi-line system. Disseminate relevant information to appropriate individuals via telephone and/or a 2-way radio and answer questions.

Monitor telephone and radio traffic and take action when necessary.

Dispatch employees to calls for service and/or evaluate reported emergency conditions.

Utilize and comply with proper security, radio, safety, and departmental policies and procedures.

Input and retrieve pertinent information from computerized databases (ARMS, NCIC, CAD, MJIC). Prioritize reports and maintain appropriate records, files, and logs.

Maintain privacy and confidentiality of information received or disseminated during course of duty.
