Description:

Effective data visualization is essential for communicating public health insights. This hands-on, two-day workshop introduces foundational principles of data visualization, covering design best practices, chart selection, storytelling techniques, and accessibility considerations. Participants will gain experience with R (ggplot2 and ggmap) for developing static charts and maps, and Tableau for developing interactive dashboards. Through a combination of lectures, hands-on exercises, and group activities, attendees will develop the skills needed to create clear, impactful, and actionable visualizations for diverse public health audiences.

Learning Objectives

Apply core principles of effective data visualization to improve the clarity and impact of their visualizations.

Select appropriate chart types based on the data and the story they want to tell, avoiding common visualization pitfalls.

Develop compelling data-driven narratives by incorporating visual storytelling techniques.

Utilize R’s ggplot2 and ggmap to create static charts and maps tailored to public health applications.

Build interactive data visualizations (i.e., dashboards) in Tableau for common public health use cases, with the audience and purpose in mind.

The instructors are providing professional development courses to professionals who work in state and local governmental public health, health care administration and practice, social work, mental and behavioral health, community health and others invested in improving health outcomes and reducing disparities.

The Summer Program in Population Health is four days of professional development courses where participants will learn:

Utilize the Results-Based Accountability (RBA) framework to develop and manage performance measures and priority indicators using Turn the Curve Thinking.

Implement best practices in data visualization and storytelling to create static and interactive visuals using R (ggplot2, ggmap) and Tableau for public health audiences.

Design and evaluate inclusive, community-centered public health programs using culturally responsive strategies and principles of cultural humility.

Define public health advocacy and identify effective strategies through historical and contemporary examples.

Interpret and communicate public health findings by integrating core concepts of field epidemiology, surveillance, and outbreak investigation.

Participants will earn:

A Summer Program in Population Health certificate of completion from The Ohio State University College of Public Health.

Participants may earn up to 14 contact hours toward CHES, MCHES, or REHS continuing education requirements.

Education and Experience Requirements:

This appointment may be at the rank of Lecturer, associated faculty.

Required:

Positive track record of university teaching or the potential to develop in this area based on prior work experience

Demonstrated academic program and/or practice-based leadership

Strong interest in teaching and mentoring students

The Division

The Division of Health Services Management and Policy’s Master of Health Administration (MHA) program is ranked 8th nationally in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings of health care management programs. The HSMP Division also leads the College’s Master of Public Health Program for Experienced Professionals (MPH-PEP), a distanced-based program which emphasizes population health leadership and management, and a PhD program. Our multidisciplinary faculty is known for their excellence in teaching, their significant research accomplishments, and their service to the health services management and policy field. The Division’s academic programs are enhanced by a strong collaborative relationship with the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC) and other health systems across Ohio. The College

The College of Public Health is Ohio’s first accredited college of public health. First established in 1995 as part of the College of Medicine, the University Board of Trustees created the College of Public Health in 2007. In 2024, U.S. News & World Report ranked Ohio State’s College of Public Health graduate program 29th of all Schools of Public Health. It is one of seven health sciences colleges on the same campus, more than any other university in the U.S. The college includes five academic divisions, two centers of outreach and engagement, four graduate degree programs with several specializations, and an undergraduate degree with two specializations, and two undergraduate minors. Specializations within the college include biostatistics, environmental health sciences, epidemiology, health behavior and health promotion, health services management and policy, veterinary public health, biomedical informatics, and clinical and translational science, and population health management and leadership.
