PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Ready to swap the office chair for mountain trails? Join the City of Aurora as a Hike Leader and guide adventurers through breathtaking landscapes outside the Metro Area! We're seeking someone who exemplifies the CORE 4 Values of integrity to ensure safety, respect for diverse participants (especially older adults!), professionalism on the trail, and top-notch customer service on every excursion. You'll lead hikes set by the Aurora Center for Active Adults, operate a 14-passenger van, and troubleshoot problems while sharing your knowledge of Rocky Mountain flora and fauna or demonstrating the ability to learn. If you have experience leading group hikes and operating passenger vans, navigating with a map and compass, and possess stellar communication skills, this trail is calling your name. Keep groups safe in varying weather conditions, comply with regulations, and assist participants every step of the way. Be part of a dedicated, collaborative team focused on program development and safety, all while exploring the stunning outdoors.

Hiring Salary is $22.00/hour.

This position is classified as VHNE (Variable Hour Non-Benefit Employee), where the selected candidate will work less than 29 hours per week. This position does not provide medical benefits. This position earns sick leave in accordance with the Healthy Families and Workplace Act.

The City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications throughout the year; as soon as we determine to have a qualified pool of applicants, this position may close quickly and without notice.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Ability to promote a culture of respect, inclusiveness and appreciation of diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and values of older adults.

Operates a 14-passenger van, escorts patrons to various locations outside the Metro Area

Acts as escort to hiking/excursion program participants

Leads a group of participants on open space and back country hikes/excursions set by the Aurora Center for Active Adults

Responsible for making sound decisions that keep the group safe while hiking/ during excursions

Knowledge of flora and fauna of the Rocky Mountains or ability to learn

Able to lead hike in all weather conditions

Ability to read and use map and compass or ability to learn

Compliance with all Open Space, State and National Forest Service groups hiking regulations including group size, leave no trace, trail etiquette, resource protection and general rules of hiking including but not limited to: Know your way, make yourself known, stay on the trail, do not disturb wildlife, be mindful of trail conditions, be aware of your surroundings.

Assists in planning hiking/excursions destinations

Assists passengers when boarding or disembarking from city vehicles

Assists with loading hiking gear/packages of the patrons as needed

Completes reports after each hike/excursion

Troubleshoots problems on hikes/excursions

Responds to emergency first aid when required

Maintains the vehicle in a safe manner

Attending staff meetings or other training as assigned

Completes accident/incident reports as required

Collaborate with other staff developing a coordinated effort for customer service, program development, safety policies and procedures.

Submit appropriate and timely reports as required.

Performs other duties as required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Education:

High School Diploma / GED

Defensive driving – must pass city course before driving city vehicles

Experience:

One year of leading group hikes

One year of operation of passenger van

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated experience working with and programming for older adults.

Wilderness First Aid and CPR – must obtain within 6 months

Demonstrated success in leading hikes

Valid Colorado CDL Driver’s License with good driving history.

Knowledge:

Rocky mountain flora and fauna

Working knowledge of traffic laws

Skills:

Strong customer service and problem-solving skills.

Must be highly motivated and take direction well with excellent interpersonal, communication and leadership skills.

Strong organization and interpersonal skills.

Strong reading/knowledge of hiking trails

Skill in the application of defensive driving techniques

Ability to read maps, hiking trail terrain, weather

Abilities:

Strong Communication skills - both orally and in writing.

Clearly solve problems, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner.

Handle sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Light to moderate physical work, ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds.

Will require some lifting, carrying, walking & standing.

Occasional hand/ eye coordination, vision to ready & interpret materials.

Frequent speech communication & hearing to maintain communication with class participants & staff.

Physical Demands:

Require occasional lifting, standing, walking, pulling or carrying up to 50 lbs.

Require occasional pushing, pulling, bending and stooping

Frequent hearing and speech communication to maintain communication with hiking participants and staff

Will require clear vision to read and interpret reports and other written documents, hiking trail maps and markings, read instructions, traffic markings and vehicle gauges

Will require clear speech communications inherent to maintaining communication with employees and residents

Essential Personnel:

When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the city, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

Work Environment:

Works both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions with some exposure to dust, weather and noise

Hand/eye coordination, vision to ready and interpret materials

Equipment Used:

Operates a van, cell phone and first aid materials

Position may require the incumbent to use personal equipment vehicle cell phone, etc., in the course of employment

Position will require the use of personal vehicle
