Job Description

The Computer Science (CS) Department seeks an experienced Systems Administrator to manage and support its Linux-based server infrastructure, ensuring high performance, security, and reliability across academic and research systems. Responsibilities include system maintenance, monitoring, backup and disaster recovery, application deployment, user support, and documentation. The role requires close collaboration with central IT, evaluation of new technologies, and budget planning. The Systems Administrator supports the CS Department and reports to the CS Department Chair.

Responsibilities

Manage and maintain Linux-based server infrastructure, including hardware and software updates, system configurations, and version control.

Monitor system performance and availability, identifying and addressing potential issues to support academic and administrative needs.

Implement and enforce security measures, including access controls, firewall configurations, and vulnerability assessments to ensure data protection and regulatory compliance.

Design and maintain backup and disaster recovery systems, ensuring data integrity, minimal downtime, and operational continuity.

Support faculty and students by deploying classroom and lab applications, providing training, and resolving escalated technical issues.

Evaluate and recommend hardware/software solutions, keeping systems aligned with departmental needs and technological advancements.

Document systems and procedures, including setup guides, standard operating procedures, and troubleshooting resources.

Collaborate with CIS and manage departmental budgets, ensuring alignment with institutional standards and financial planning for IT resources.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, with at least two years of hands-on Linux systems administration.

Expertise in managing Linux-based services, such as web (e.g., Apache, Nginx), database (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL), and remote file systems (NFS, SMB/CIFS).

Proficiency with automation and configuration tools such as Ansible, Puppet, or Chef, along with scripting in Python, Bash, or Perl.

Experience with containerization and orchestration, including Docker and Kubernetes, and familiarity with virtualization (KVM, VMware)

Strong system monitoring and troubleshooting skills, using tools like Nagios, Zabbix, or Prometheus to maintain performance and reliability.

Solid understanding of networking concepts (i.e., TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPNs) and secure authentication protocols (e.g., Kerberos, LDAP).

Experience managing storage solutions, including SANs and performance optimization of distributed file systems.

Excellent communication, collaboration, and project management skills, with the ability to support users, prioritize tasks, and provide 24 7 on-call support when needed.

Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities

Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).

Compensation

The starting annual base salary range is $71,665- $90,000.
