Job Description
Construction company based in Farmingdale is seeking a dependable and detail-oriented Assistant Controller with a strong background in general accounting and prior experience in the construction industry. The ideal candidate will be capable of working independently and collaboratively, with hands-on involvement in the monthly close process, financial statement preparation, and reconciliation of bank and general ledger accounts. This role also includes managing direct reports, including the Purchase Order Manager, and providing administrative and technical guidance to accounting staff.
The position is paying up to $150K and the company wants to hire ASAP!
Key Responsibilities:
Support the Controller in the accurate and timely preparation, analysis, and presentation of financial reports, statements, and tax filings on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
Assist in preparing percentage-of-completion financial statements in compliance with GAAP.
Oversee and manage the Purchase Order Manager to ensure operational efficiency.
Provide direction and support to staff in areas such as accounting, billing, and accounts payable.
Recommend and implement financial and operational policies related to general ledger and job costing practices.
Contribute to internal and external audits, including mid-year reviews and year-end audits.
Perform monthly bank reconciliations.
Supply financial data to support proposal development as needed.
Serve as a backup for sales tax and HUT tax filings.
Assist the Controller in monitoring daily cash transactions and processing wire transfers when needed.
Ensure all accounting functions align with GAAP standards.
Participate in special projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.
A minimum of 5 years of accounting experience in the construction industry is strongly preferred.
Must have hands-on experience preparing WIP (Work in Progress) schedules.
Strong understanding of GAAP and internal control procedures is preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work across all levels of the organization.
Demonstrated analytical, problem-solving, and research capabilities.
Ability to perform under pressure and meet strict deadlines.
Highly organized with strong time management skills and attention to detail.
Self-motivated with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Comfortable managing multiple priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
