Position Description
The Taylor Family Department of Neurosurgery at Washington University in St. Louis is seeking a motivated Functional Neurosurgeon-Scientist to join our distinguished program. The selected candidate will have the chance to continue a well-established functional practice at one of the nation's premier academic medical centers and practice at BJC hospitals, one of the largest nonprofit healthcare systems in the United States.
The department of Neurosurgery is a dynamic program that has grown significantly in volume, workforce, and national recognition over the last five years. With a NIH funding ranking, the department s high-impact research program helps bring the most cutting-edge treatments from the lab to the bedside and differentiates WashU globally. Additionally, WashU Neurosurgery believes strongly in the value of multidisciplinary care and has fostered robust scientific and clinical partnerships with other departments like neurology, psychiatry, and more.
The functional program has developed into a well-established clinical practice in epilepsy surgery, deep brain stimulation, focused ultrasound, and stereotactic radiosurgery, and is a strategic priority for future growth. However, the vision for this program extends beyond the established procedures to areas like Brain Computer Interfaces, Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Stroke, Sonobiopsy,
Neuromodulation for depression, and Neurostimulation for pain. Through the creation of the Division of Neurotechnology and supported by basic and translational scientists based within the Division, WashU Neurosurgery is at the forefront of innovation in Functional Neurosurgery and continues to push for improved techniques and outcomes.
Basic Qualifications
Completed residency in a U.S. neurosurgery training program.
Board certified or eligible in neurosurgery and completion of a functional fellowship
Additional Qualifications
Expertise in cutting-edge functional neurosurgery and a desire to push the field forward through innovative research and novel treatments.
Passion for academic neurosurgery, a vision for their own research program, and the ability to secure extramural funding to support their research enterprise
Ability to build a multi-faceted functional practice in close collaboration with allied departments including neurology and psychiatry and the hospital system
Clinical, scientific, and strategic vision to build and contribute to a leading-edge multi-disciplinary Neuromodulation Center
Strong interest in training the next generation of functional neurosurgeons.
Preferred candidates will have:
Strong track record of NIH funding
Strong track record of practice building
Strong track record as a leader in the functional neurosurgery space
Leadership opportunities:
