Job Description
Position Overview
We’re looking for a hands-on, motivated Apprentice Service Technician to join our growing team.
You’ll perform basic preventative maintenance and diagnostics of residential and light commercial HVAC systems. Your mission is to deliver great service, build trust with customers, and grow your skills on the path to becoming a journeyman.
This role is ideal for someone who is mechanically inclined, eager to learn the HVAC trade in both residential and commercial environments and takes pride in problem-solving and delivering great service.
As we grow, this position has a clear path into Lead HVAC Service Technician for the right person. If you’re ready to step up and own it in the field, let’s talk.
Key Responsibilities
Perform basic HVAC maintenance tasks independently—such as filter changes, coil cleaning, equipment inspections, and system startups—with roaming support from senior techs as needed
Assist senior techs on more complex diagnostics and repairs across both residential and commercial systems
Learn to identify and troubleshoot common issues with heat pumps, furnaces, A/C units, RTUs, mini-splits, and basic control systems
Support preventative maintenance program (PMP) visits and help educate customers on the value of ongoing service
Document service activities, parts used, and system condition clearly and consistently
Maintain a clean, organized work area—job site, vehicle, and tools
Communicate professionally with customers and represent Santiam with pride in the field
Take part in ongoing training focused on safety, startup procedures, low-voltage wiring, and control systems
Occasionally assist with after-hours calls, ride-alongs, or scheduled overtime, under guidance from senior staff
Qualifications
1–2 years of HVAC experience or hands-on exposure to mechanical or technical trades
Comfortable performing basic maintenance tasks independently with remote support as needed
Strong interest in HVAC systems—especially in learning controls and startup procedures
Reliable, self-motivated, and a team-first attitude with a strong work ethic
Willingness to learn and take direction from senior technicians
Comfortable using hand tools, climbing ladders, and navigating commercial and residential job sites
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
Must be able to lift 50+ lbs and work in tight or elevated spaces
Preferred Qualifications
Enrollment in an HVAC apprenticeship program (Chemeketa Community College or similar)
Basic understanding of electrical circuits, low-voltage wiring, or mechanical systems
EPA Section 608 Certification (or willingness to earn)
Experience using or interest in field service apps like ServiceTitan
