JOB SUMMARY
The Robotics Engineer - Intern is responsible for supporting THINK Surgical’s TMINI tracking optimization initiatives. This role offers a unique opportunity to work on the intersection of mechanical design, control, and software, with a strong emphasis on experiment execution and test fixture development. This internship is based in the Fremont, CA office.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Design, build, and validate custom test fixtures, with potential integration of microcontroller-based actuation and sensing.
Execute and support experiments to evaluate system tracking, dynamic performance, and mechanical backlash, including data processing and performance metric analysis.
Assist in experiment planning, documentation, and data analysis for system-level characterization.
Learning Opportunities
Exposure to real-world system characterization in surgical robotics.
Experience building custom tools and fixtures for engineering experiments.
Mentorship from experienced robotics professionals.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Enrolled in or a recent graduate of a BS or MS program in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, or related field.
Experience with CAD modeling and rapid prototyping/3D printing.
Familiarity with microcontrollers (e.g. Arduino, STM32) and basic embedded programming.
Familiarity with Python for data analysis and scripting.
Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.
Comfortable working hands-on with hardware and instrumentation.
Able to work full time in Fremont, CA (located in San Francisco Bay Area) for at least 3 to 6 months. Position is not eligible for relocation.
Knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and applicable Quality System Standards.
Preferred:
Experience using SolidWorks.
Experience writing test automation or data processing scripts in Python, MATLAB, or similar
Familiarity with control and estimation theory and system dynamics.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
Must be able to remain in a stationary position and operate office equipment for a prolonged period of time.
Physical activities include, but not limited to constant manual dexterity, moving about the work site, and/or handling objects weighing up to 20 lbs.
Other infrequent physical activities include, but not limited to, positioning self to complete assigned tasks, and ascending/descending floors and/or ladders.
Occasionally work around moving mechanical parts.
Must be able to work in a schedule that commensurate with business operation, including work during weekends, holidays and/or times outside of normal business hours.
Must be able to travel as business necessitates (up to 5%).
