Summary

This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Office of the Chief Engineer, Construction Division, Construction Branch. The individual is a Motor Vehicle Operator performing driving and operating duties on a variety of motor vehicles and equipment and also performs diverse construction laborer duties, including assisting with demolition and clean-up at construction sites, erecting scaffolding, using carpentry tools, etc.

Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required.

Duties

The tour of duty is 4:00 AM to 2:30 PM (Monday - Thursday) Hours may change due to Operating Needs of Management

This position is emergency essential. Depending on the type of emergency the employee may be required to report to work during emergency situations.

The incumbent drives the 2008 Kenworth, Model T300 on a regular and recurring basis10 to 18 hours per week. The vehicle has air brakes and the GVW is 54,600 lbs. requiring a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Other vehicles driven on a regular basis include: 2006 International DT466, GVW 33,000 lbs., 2012 International Durastar, GVW 23,000 lbs. and the 2013 Ford F-750, GVW 26,000 lbs. and large trailers. Also operates forklifts, hand jacks, electric pallet jacks and pallet wrap machines. The incumbent loads vehicles, transports supplies and equipment to multiple sites, such as Ft. Meade, MD, Alexandria, VA, Landover, MD, Upper Marlboro, MD and out-of-state such as Ohio, Pennsylvania and North Carolina.

Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required.

MAJOR DUTIES:

- Loads and transports scaffolds, equipment and materials and transports to work site. Erects scaffolding at worksite. Assists in handling materials. Operates vehicles to pick up and deliver parts, materials and supplies from various locations. Ensures that the cargo is properly loaded, distributed and secured and that the vehicle is not loaded beyond the designed capacity.

- Operates single-function equipment that have components/attachments that are independently controlled through hydraulic and/or mechanical devices. Attaches, adjusts and operates attachments designed for equipment. Cleans, oils and makes minor operational adjustments on power equipment utilized in the work.

- Maintains cleanliness of work site and shop areas in support of craftsmen by cleaning area as directed.

- Utilizes significant manual skill in lifting, carrying and moving equipment, supplies and materials to assigned areas.

- Assists in erecting and dismantling walls, ceilings, doors and built-in furniture. Operates power jacks and transporters to move excessively heavy objects, heavily loaded skids, etc.

- Uses hand trucks, dollies, flatbed trucks, etc., to move very heavy materials.

- Prepares and restores the work site; fills and levels holes, tracks and ruts. Repairs damaged roadways, mixing materials and leveling surface of patch with tamper; sets forms, mixes and pours concrete, etc. Operates various power equipment, adjusting controls, mechanisms, oiling and cleaning. May occasionally operate and control specialized powered equipment, such as jack hammers or heavy power tools.

- Assists journey level trades workers by performing general laborer duties such as moving large quantities of materials weighting up to 50 lbs. and cleaning up job sites.

- Complies with all OSHA work safety practices and utilizes personal protective equipment as required.

- Performs other related duties as assigned for all functions and trades associated with construction projects.

Qualifications

Must possess a valid, unexpired Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsements.

Must current possess a good driving record. Possession of a good driving record is included in the suitability process. Maintenance thereof is a condition of continued employment. Ability to lift, push and pull heavy objects weighing up to 50 lbs. or more without assistance.
