The Director of Marketing and Engagement directs the ASRA Pain Medicine membership, marketing, and communications strategy. This individual supervises all membership and communications staff and reports to the Executive Director.

Term of position

This is a full time, at-will employee of ASRA Pain Medicine.

Primary Responsibilities

Strategic Development

1. Works with Executive Director and the Director of Education and Operations to develop and implement the organizational strategic plan.

2. Partners with the Director of Education and Operations to provide cross-functional oversight and design compelling campaigns and outreach strategies.

3. Provides overall strategic and operational leadership for marketing and communication efforts targeted to various audiences, including members, nonmembers, industry, and the public.

4. Leads the strategic and operational accountability for the organization’s membership operations, which may include recruitment and retention of members, member services, and engagement.

5. Establishes and monitors key marketing, membership, and engagement performance indicators and identifies areas for improvement as needed.

Membership, Marketing, and Communications

1. Develops and executes the annual membership plan, in collaboration with the Membership Manager and Communications Manager to grow membership with measurable and attainable goals.

2. Develops and directs marketing campaigns for ASRA Pain Medicine conferences, workshops, and other projects in collaboration with the Communications Manager to achieve strategic priorities of increased brand awareness and visibility.

3. Manages overall organizational communication strategy in collaboration with the Communications Manager.

4. Oversees the management of the ASRA Pain Medicine customer relationship management (CRM) database, including

a. Partnering with the Membership Manager, who is the primary contact for all database-related inquiries, issues, and updates.

b. Collaborating with the Communications Manager to integrate the system with the Society’s website.

c. Identifying module development and implementation as needed.

5. Creates budgets for membership, mobile applications, public relations, and other projects as directed, ensuring compliance with projected revenue goals.

6. Supervises all membership and communications staff, creating goals, completing evaluations, and directing activities to achieve the society’s strategic priorities and goals.

7. Directs the committee nomination process and supports the president directly on the committee volunteer process from application, appointment, onboarding, and recognition.

8. Serves as the in-house expert on volunteer and engagement issues.

9. Develops and directs membership reports including segmentation studies.

10. Directs overall Special Interest Group (SIG) strategies and activities in collaboration with Membership Manager.

11. Assist with all membership, marketing, and communications activities as needed.

Mobile Applications

1. Coordinates the maintenance of all ASRA Pain Medicine mobile applications and tracks usage.

2. Oversees member list management and/or integration with the ASRA Coags app.

3. Serves as the in-house staff contact for all app questions.

Editorial/Writing

1. Develops, maintains, and trains appropriate staff on an ASRA Pain Medicine Style Guide in conjunction with the Communications Manager.

2. Copyedits/proofreads Board correspondence, position statements, marketing messages, emails, etc. as assigned.

3. Writes copy for news items, blog posts, news releases, marketing pieces, email blasts, etc.

4. Contracts and oversee the work of contract medical writers/editors as needed.

5. Serve as in-house expert on permissions and use of copyrighted materials.

Public Relations/Advertising

1. Serves as primary contact for media and coordinates media responses in conjunction with President and Executive Director.

2. Produces press releases and oversees public relations campaigns as needed.

3. Develops talking points for leadership on key ASRA Pain Medicine messaging.

4. Provides crisis management expertise when society issues arise.

5. Collaborates with the Exhibitions Account Executive on prospectus development and advertising partnerships

6. Directs advertising purchases and barters.

Affiliated Society Engagement

1. Assists the Executive Director in supporting the administrative activities of two smaller affiliate societies. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

a. Organizing and participating in board meetings, committee meetings, and other initiatives.

b. Executing membership recruitment, retention, and engagement campaigns.

c. Managing society websites, databases, and communication systems.

Supports the activities and priorities of the society with other work as assigned

Skills and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree required

• CAE certification a plus

• At least seven years’ experience in membership, marketing, or equivalent experience in an association or society

• Ability to demonstrate diplomacy, discretion, and independent judgment

• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite

• Experience with Google Analytics, SEO desired

• Experience working with designers, basic design software; Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop) a plus

• Experience managing and maintaining a membership database and a content management system for the website

• Effective oral and written communications skills including the ability to interact successfully with internal and external contacts

• Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work in a team as well as independently

• Ability to travel, work overtime, and lift up to 50 pounds, as necessary
