As a Functional Safety Engineer, you will work on complex safety programs from concept through delivery, interfacing directly with design authorities and end clients . You’ll impact critical decisions, ensure compliance with stringent standards, and contribute to systems protecting national and international security interests.
What you will do
Conduct hazard analyses ( HAZOP, FTA, FMEA ) to identify risks in naval systems early in development
Ensure compliance with international safety standards such as IEC 61508 and MIL-Std-882E
Develop and apply risk mitigation strategies to enhance system safety
Maintain clear, traceable documentation using a defined risk matrix
Collaborate with engineers to integrate safety requirements into system designs
Define and manage system safety requirements specific to naval vessels
Serve as the primary contact for internal and external safety-related matters
Promote safety culture through training, awareness, and knowledge sharing
Drive improvements in safety processes across the department
Ensure strict adherence to HSSEQ and IMED policies

What you already have
BSc. or MSc. degree in the relevant technical field
System safety engineering experience, ideally in shipbuilding or naval defense
Knowledge of safety analysis methods and standards (IEC 61508, MIL-Std-882E, Machine Directive)
Solid grasp of mechanical, electrical, and automation systems
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
Proficient in MS Office and requirements management tools
Fluent in English ; both written and spoken
Strong references; security screening applies
EU citizenship and passport required—no dual or non-EU nationalities eligible due to project restrictions
Available for full-time in the Rotterdam Area or Vlissingen
