What you'll do on a typical day

The TRIO Talent Search grant provides programming to Lexington and Thomasville City Schools. The Lead Student Success Advisor, TRIO Talent Search, provides comprehensive academic, personal, career, and financial counseling to students in grades 6–12. This position supports student success, high school graduation, and postsecondary enrollment. In coordination with the Director of TRIO HS Partnerships, the Lead Advisor provides programmatic oversight and staff support during periods when the Director is managing the Upward Bound program, ensuring continuity of services, supervision of Talent Search staff, and coordination of activities aligned with federal guidelines.

Essential Job Functions:

Deliver one-on-one and group advising to Talent Search participants regarding college, career, and academic planning (CCAPs).

Conduct outreach and recruitment efforts across target schools to maintain participant enrollment.

Review student records (transcripts, report cards, attendance) and implement targeted interventions.

Assist students with secondary/postsecondary course selection, admissions applications, financial aid, and college entrance exam preparation.

Coordinate and facilitate enrichment activities such as college visits, cultural events, and workshops for students and families.

Oversee student recruitment processes and help manage participant tracking systems (e.g., Blumen).

Monitor program compliance by ensuring accurate documentation of services, student records, and adherence to grant objectives.

Serve as acting lead for the Talent Search program, in coordination with the Director, during periods when the Director is focused on managing Upward Bound responsibilities.

In partnership with the Director, support day-to-day operations—including staff scheduling, event coordination, and logistical planning—particularly when the Director is managing the Upward Bound Program, ensuring alignment with their priorities and decisions.

In collaboration with the Director, assist with mentoring new Talent Search staff and support onboarding and professional development efforts—particularly when the Director is focused on managing the Upward Bound program—to ensure alignment with their vision and guidance

In partnership with the Director, support and help lead program meetings during periods when the Director is managing the Upward Bound program, ensuring that key updates are communicated to staff and stakeholders with the Director’s awareness and alignment.

Work collaboratively with school administrators, counselors, and community partners to support participant success.

Prepare and submit monthly service logs, reports, and evaluations to the Director.

Contribute to the annual performance review and reporting process for the Talent Search grant.

Participate in state and national professional development events as needed.

Required to work evenings, weekends, and travel as necessary to fulfill program responsibilities and support student events and activities.

Your attributes

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in education, administration,counseling, or related field.

Minimum two years of experience advising/counseling youth in an educational setting.

Minimum of two years of experience supervising staff, including responsibility for providing guidance, assigning tasks, and/or evaluating performance

Experience working with low-income, first-generation, or at-risk student populations.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with federal Department of Education programs or TRiO Programs.

Work experience with North Carolina’s public schools and/or community organizations

Work experience in a college setting

Fluency in Spanish

Experience with Blumen database

Work environment

ADA requirements for this position include critical thinking skills with the ability to process information and exercise good judgment; ease of mobility within the work environment and other areas of schools, campus and College locations; travel between schools and campus locations may be required; and effective use of all forms of communication including use of computers.
