Description
Are you a first mate or stew/mate with a captain’s license looking for your own command — and a unique lifestyle role that combines time at sea with time managing a private island? We’re seeking an ambitious, hands-on professional to serve as both Captain of a 63' Hatteras and Manager of a private 38-acre island off the coast of Maine.
This is a rare opportunity to take the helm of your own boat while gaining valuable land-based management experience. You’ll live aboard the yacht when underway and transition to a shared crew house on the island during the summer. The role offers a balance of autonomy, adventure, and responsibility — ideal for someone ready to step up.
Location: Seasonal in Maine (June–September); Remainder based on yacht itinerary (currently St. Thomas, USVI)
Lifestyle & Expectations:
This is a hybrid land/sea role with significant autonomy and responsibility. During the summer, you'll be based on the island (shared crew house provided). The rest of the year, you’ll live aboard the yacht and manage maintenance and movement as needed. Flexibility, resourcefulness, and a can-do attitude are essential.
Why This Role?
Command your own yacht — no rotating captain hierarchy
Manage a private island — gain skills beyond the dock
Stable private ownership — not a charter grind
Balanced lifestyle — seasonal rhythm with variety
Be part of something personal, well-maintained, and respected
Compensation & Benefits:
Competitive salary based on experience
Housing provided (crew house in Maine, yacht otherwise)
All food costs covered while on duty
Health care provided
Cell phone allowance
Travel covered to and from duty locations
Potential for long-term placement with stability and ownership involvement
Key Responsibilities:
Yacht Captain Duties (Year-round):
Operate and maintain a 63' Hatteras motor yacht, including navigation, mechanical systems, and safety.
Plan and carry out passages (currently in the Caribbean and U.S. East Coast).
Handle provisioning, light interior care, and cooking for owner while aboard.
Oversee compliance with all USCG and safety regulations.
Coordinate additional crew when needed for trips or maintenance.
Island Manager Duties (June–September):
Manage day-to-day operations of a 38-acre private island used seasonally.
Maintain and operate island vessels, docks, and marine infrastructure.
Supervise or coordinate seasonal help, tradespeople, and service vendors.
Handle supply runs and logistics to and from the mainland.
Prepare the property for owner use in early summer and shutdown in fall.
Qualifications
Ideal Candidate Profile:
USCG 100-Ton Master's License (or equivalent) in hand and ready to use.
Background as a stew/mate, bosun, or first mate with strong systems knowledge.
Familiarity with vessel upkeep, marine systems, and basic mechanical/electrical troubleshooting.
Comfortable with cooking simple, quality meals while on board.
Confident managing schedules, projects, and property upkeep independently.
Self-starting, respectful, and professional with good communication skills.
Bonus Points For:
Carpentry, plumbing, or general trades experience.
Familiarity with Maine coastal cruising or Caribbean passages.
A track record of stepping up and handling both deck and interior responsibilities.
