Position: Assistant Secondary Principal
Supervisor: Principal
General Job Description: The Assistant Principal will use leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills to promote the educational development of each student. The Assistant Principal will be responsible for the same competencies as a Principal and work under the direction of the Principal. The Assistant Principal will follow the competencies and indicators found in the Handbook for Highly Objective Uniform Statewide Standard of Evaluation (HOUSSE) for Principals and Assistant Principals in the State of New Mexico.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Assistant Principal promotes the success of all students by maintaining a culture that supports student achievement, high quality instruction, and professional development to meet the diverse learning needs of the school community.
The Principal uses communication and relationship-building skills to engage the larger community in the knowledge of an advocacy for equity in meeting the diverse needs of the school community.
The Principal organizes and coordinates ongoing professional learning opportunities that are aligned with the New Mexico Professional Development Framework and supports the diverse learning needs of the school community.
The Principal manages the school campus, budget, and daily operations to equitably meet the diverse learning need of the school community.
The middle school and high school Principal develops, supports, encourages and supervises programs that lead to increased student attendance, achievement, and graduation rates resulting in college readiness and work skills to meet the diverse needs of the community.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
Administer the school in the Principal's absence
Represent the Principal at various events or meetings as needed
Supervise the coordination of the instruction program and classroom control
Share responsibility for supervision of school activities
Supervise assigned staff
Supervise all other resource and service personnel while functioning in your school
Comply with timelines and requests for information from state and/or district administration
Meet with committees (SAT, PAC, PLC's, Goal Teams, Leadership Teams, etc.) in a consistent and timely manner as assigned by Principal
Keep artifacts of all meetings including attendance logs
Promote and support district initiatives
Support EPSS with Principal and leadership team and submit with data as per district timeline
Compile data, or appoint individuals to compile data, and use to drive instructional decisions
Be available to parents, students, administration, and peers outside the school day, if needed
Be responsible for pupil behavior on the campus, handling cased up to and including recommendation for suspension or expulsion
Administer the attendance accounting system as directed by the Principal
Attend extra curricular activities
Report suspected child abuse and neglect
Be responsible for students on field trips
Act as a good role model within the context of the school
Develop and use community and professional resources
Understand and apply learning theories
Accept other responsibilities as deemed necessary by the supervisor
Qualifications: Master's degree and valid NM administrative license as required by the State of New Mexico. The willingness to pursue such a license as necessary. The willingness to be a principal at some point in time. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
Physical Requirements: Ability to perform the job and access the environment for which you are hired. The following may be required: Sitting, standing, lifting, moving about the room or school, carrying (up to 50 pounds), reaching, squatting, kneeling, prolonged typing, physical ability to type on a keyboard terminal, and moving light furniture.
Equipment/Technology Handled: Must know how to properly operate or be willing to learn to operate all multimedia equipment including current technology.
Work Environment: Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignment without direct supervision. After hour work may be required.
Terms of Employment: Salary and work calendar established yearly by the district.
Middle School Assistant Principals are on a 205 day contract.
High School Assistant Principals are on a 210 day contract.
