Job Title: Laboratory Outreach Personnel

Department: Laboratory Services – Outreach Operations

Reports To: Outreach Supervisor

Location: Draw Station (Outreach Site)

Job Summary:

The Laboratory Outreach Personnel is responsible for providing phlebotomy services at an assigned draw station. This role involves collecting blood and other specimens from patients, registering new patients, coordinating courier pickups and send-outs, and managing supplies in collaboration with the Outreach Supervisor. The position operates independently from the main laboratory and requires a phlebotomy certification with prior experience.

Key Responsibilities:

Patient Care and Specimen Collection:

Perform venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures safely and efficiently.

Ensure accurate patient identification and labeling of specimens in accordance with laboratory protocols.

Provide excellent customer service, addressing patient concerns and ensuring a positive experience.

Patient Registration and Documentation:

Register new patients and update existing records using the laboratory information system (LIS).

Verify patient information, including insurance details and physician orders.

Maintain accurate records of all collections, registrations, and transactions.

Logistics and Coordination:

Coordinate courier pickups and specimen send-outs to ensure timely delivery to the testing laboratory.

Communicate regularly with the courier service to confirm schedules and resolve any issues.

Track and document specimen transfers to maintain proper chain of custody.

Inventory and Supply Management:

Monitor inventory levels of materials, reagents, and supplies at the draw station.

Request supplies from the Outreach Supervisor to ensure uninterrupted operations.

Conduct routine checks of equipment and report any maintenance or supply needs promptly.

Compliance and Safety:

Adhere to laboratory safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Comply with regulatory standards from agencies such as CLIA, CAP, and state health departments.

Participate in routine audits, inspections, and quality control measures.

Qualifications:

Education and Certification:

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Phlebotomy certification (e.g., ASCP, NHA, or equivalent) required.

Completion of accredited phlebotomy training program preferred.

Experience:

Minimum of 1-2 years of phlebotomy experience required, preferably in an outpatient or outreach setting.

Experience with patient registration and laboratory information systems (LIS) is preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

Proficient in specimen collection techniques, including venipuncture and specimen handling.

Strong organizational and time management skills.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work independently and make decisions within established guidelines.

Proficient in computer applications, including Microsoft Office and laboratory systems.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in a clinical draw station environment with exposure to biological hazards.

Frequent standing and walking are required, along with the handling of medical equipment and specimens.

The role may require occasional travel to other outreach sites.
