DEQ has an open opportunity for an Engineer I (Flexible/Hybrid).

It is full-time (40 hours per week) with State Benefits

This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workdays. The NC Department of Environmental Quality trusts our employees to be self-motivated and successful in hybrid/remote roles. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management.

This Engineer I position will review funding applications, engineering reports, and engineering drawings/ specifications, provide construction management for funded projects and serve as a liaison for the program to municipalities, consulting engineers, the public, interest groups, organizations, and the Division.

Other Key Responsibilities:

Reviews applications, completes timely and detailed reviews of engineering plan submittal.

Ensures timely and detailed review of engineering drawings and specifications for compliance with Federal and State laws, rules, and policies, and good engineering practices.

Performs inspections of sites/facilities.

Advises and provides engineering guidance and written technical/compliance documentation to staff and clients. Meets with applicants and their consultants to facilitate project development, design, construction, and ultimately permit approval and site compliance.

Valid driver’s license.

The Division of Air Quality (DAQ) works with the state's citizens to protect and improve outdoor, or ambient, air quality in North Carolina for the health, benefit and economic well-being of all. To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:

Ability to apply the basic engineering concepts, practices, and theories involved in the design, development, review, permitting, and/or operations of projects/sites and their potential environmental and safety impacts.

Ability to review engineering/technical plans and/or data for completeness, compatibility, compliance with engineering principles, standards, codes or design needs.

Ability to make recommendations to higher level engineers or managers on project concerns/issues.

Ability to communicate, both verbally and in written form, with people such as the general public, environmental contacts, public officials, and other similar personnel.

Ability to write technical reports and use spreadsheets or databases.

Valid driver's license.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification: May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
