Position Overview:

We are looking for a highly experienced video compression expert to lead Ofinno’s Advanced Media Lab and provide strategic direction for our contributions to international standards. This is a unique opportunity to influence the evolution of MPEG and JVET standards, including:

Enhanced Compression Model (ECM) – MPEG’s exploratory test model beyond VVC

Geometry-based point cloud compression (G-PCC)

Video-based dynamic mesh coding (VDMC)The ideal candidate will have a history of impactful leadership in MPEG and/or JVET, a deep understanding of compression theory and implementation, and a passion for aligning technical innovation with long-term standardization goals.

You’ll lead a team of world-class researchers and work cross-functionally with our patent and licensing teams to ensure that technical work also supports strategic IP value creation.

Key Responsibilities:

As Director, Advanced Media Lab, you will:

Set research direction and drive high-impact contributions to MPEG and JVET standards

Guide the evolution and coordination of proposals related to ECM, G-PCC, VDMC, and new neural/hybrid video tools

Lead and mentor a high-performing team of researchers

Collaborate with executive leadership on roadmap planning and IP portfolio alignment

Represent Ofinno in international standardization meetings and technical discussions

Shape standard-essential patents by turning research into timely, technically robust filings

Cultivate relationships with industry partners, clients, and academic collaborators to align innovation with broader ecosystem needsQualifications:

Ph.D. or M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field

10+ years of hands-on R&D experience in video or immersive media compression

Deep expertise in video codec design, including prediction, transform, filtering, entropy coding, and/or loop filtering

Proven leadership and technical contributions to international standards such as MPEG, JVET, or ITU-T VCEG—including experience with VVC (H.266), G-PCC, VDMC, and/or ECM

Familiarity with emerging coding paradigms including neural compression

Proficient in C/C++ and comfortable working with reference software and large-scale codec experiments

Experience mentoring teams, managing R&D pipelines, and aligning technical output with patent and licensing goals

Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage stakeholders across technical and business domains

Demonstrated success converting research into high-quality patent filings and/or licensing-relevant innovationsWhat Else You Should Know:
