Director of Accounting & Payroll

This is a unique direct hire opportunity with an organization committed to growth and success, offering you the chance to join their team in a key leadership role. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in accounting functions, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to navigate complex financial challenges with confidence.

This key role is responsible for managing critical financial operations, including cash management, investments, bond and debt activity, payroll, and financial reporting, while ensuring compliance with internal controls and accounting policies. The successful candidate must be resilient, data-driven, and goal-oriented, with a proven ability to complete projects efficiently.

Experience with ORACLE is a plus.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead the monthly financial close process, ensuring accuracy in journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial reporting.

Oversee payroll operations, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

Drive the development and implementation of accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.

Provide strategic oversight of bond, debt, and investment activity, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.

Collaborate with external auditors during the annual audit to ensure smooth execution and compliance.

Partner with leadership and department heads to deliver financial analysis, budget variance reporting, and actionable recommendations.

Maintain the integrity and scalability of the Chart of Accounts (COA), exercising full authority over the classification and booking of all transactions.

Ensure compliance with GAAP and stay informed of new accounting standards and regulations.

Actively engage in system upgrades, process improvements, and financial automation projects.

Prepare detailed journal entries, account analyses, and tax-related information.

Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure smooth coordination across financial accounting activities. Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) - required

5-7 years of experience in accounting and payroll management

Expertise in financial reporting and month-end close processes

Proficiency in ERP systems, particularly in financial management tools

In-depth knowledge of GAAP and regulatory compliance

Ability to confidently present and explain financial data to senior leadership, particularly in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments

Strong communication skills and ability to build relationships across the organization

Resilient and adaptable in dynamic, high-stakes environments Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in higher education or non-profit accounting environments

Experience with ORACLE or other large ERP systems

Prior experience reporting directly to a Director/VP of Finance or CFO
