Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, Ingalls Memorial Hospital, as a Clinical Lab Associate (Phlebotomist) in the Tinley Park Laboratory department. Here, you will work in partnership with other laboratory team members and departments, patient care services, and other hospital departments. The person in this role is required to perform at least phlebotomy, order entry, central processing, EKG’s, performing laboratory testing, and assist with DOT’s and BAT’s as needed. When full competency at level 1 has been achieved, the person may be elevated to CLA level 2. The Lab Services Center are available for urgent or standard result times. We can analyze specimens at the cellular, chemical, endocrinological or immunologic levels. Through numerous lab specialties and processes, we offer an expansive array of tests performed by experienced laboratory professionals to provide insights on your health. This department is the Tinley Park Laboratory. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.

Under the leadership of the Director and Manager of Laboratory Services and FCC Laboratory Supervisors, performs assigned supportive work in the delivery of patient care, involving multiple office, clerical and technical duties. Interacting, intervening, and problem solving to ensure exceptional customer service by greeting patients, responding to telephone inquiries, phones/faxes and distribution of test results. Processes human specimens for delivery to laboratory for testing. Performs limited number of technical procedures, for which training and competency is demonstrated. Performs blood specimen collection within compliance of Federal Regulatory Guidelines. Performs application/removal of non-invasive cardio-respiratory monitors and obtain EKG’s. Demonstrates necessary skills and knowledge through competencies for specific skills; all appropriate to the age of patients served as delineated by competency tools. Performs other duties as assigned.

Observes and adheres to all corporate compliance requirements and communicates issues as they arise to the appropriate parties as identified in the corporate compliance plan. Works in partnership with other laboratory team members, patient care services, and other FCC departments.

CLA 1 role is entry level. The person in this role is required to perform both of the CLA workstations: draw room and workbench in the laboratory. CLA 2 is required to achieve CLA 1 duties, and assume additional responsibilities, including acting as Lead CLA.

Essential Job Functions

Performs physician ordered venipuncture for blood specimen collection from patients following the policies and procedures of the Department of Laboratory Services

Performs electrocardiogram (EKG) tests on pediatric and adult patients as ordered; transmits and completes test in compliance with the Department of Cardiology policies and procedures

Processes and prepares specimens for proper delivery to UCM Ingalls Memorial Hospital

Organizes specimens according to temperature requirement (ambient, refrigerated, or frozen) and sends tracking list with all specimens forwarded to UCM Ingalls Memorial Hospital

Perform on site testing for STAT and coagulation orders following the policies and procedures of the Department of Laboratory Services

Performs daily maintenance and QC and analyzes QC results. Troubleshoots when QC fails and analyzer errors occur

Other duties as assigned by Supervisor

Required Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent

Completed accredited phlebotomy course or program if duties include phlebotomy and/or have received on the job training prior to employment

At least 6 months of phlebotomy, laboratory, medical or clerical expereince with an emphasis on customer service within the last two years

Familiarity with medical terminology and basic computer skills

Interpersonal skills in dealing with patiens, families, and co-workers

Ability to function effectively in an extended team environment

Ability to resolve conflict effectively

Ability to work in a fast-paced, time critical department

Ability to give and receive feedback

Successful completion of accredited phlebotomy program or certification by: ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists, AMT (American Medical Technologist), NPA (National Phlebotomy Association) *Certification number required*, ASCLS (American Society for Clinical Laboratory Scientists), NCA (National Certifying Agency), NHA (National Healthcare Association) (CPT), ACA (American Certifying Agency), NCCT (National Center for Competency Testing),

Compensation & Benefits Overview

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits. The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
