Job Summary:

The Communication Studies Department is currently accepting applications for an adjunct pool in Media Communication. As specific needs for adjuncts are not always known, applicants who meet the initial review for qualifications will be placed into an adjunct pool for consideration as positions become available. Courses in Media Communication may include:

• COM 1050 Introduction to Media Communication (3)

• COM 1075 Scriptwriting for Television and Film (3)

• COM 2015 Radio Workshop (1)

• COM 2016 Television Workshop (1)

• COM 2017 Photography Workshop (1)

• COM 2043 Introduction to TV and Film Production (3)

• COM 3000 Narrative and Documentary Film (3)

• COM 3026 Media Aesthetics (3)

• COM 3095 Media Literacy (3)

• COM 4022 Portfolio Construction (1)

• COM 4085 Communication, Values, and Society (2)

• COM 4026 Advanced Media Practicum (3)

Salary

PLNU pays adjuncts based on their experience and academic rank. Using a 3-unit full semester appointment as a pay guide, the adjunct pay ranges would be between $4,860 and $6,480. The actual salary will be determined by the units, course length, experience, and rank of the candidate. Adjuncts are paid on an hourly basis which includes preparation and teaching time.

Job Description:

RESPONSIBILITIES

Adjuncts must have knowledge of instructional strategies and techniques appropriate to teaching undergraduate level, including ways to instruct, manage, motivate and evaluate students as well as the ability to write syllabi and deliver illustrated lectures.

QUALIFICATIONS

Masters in a specified discipline from an accredited college. Doctorate preferred. Bachelors may be considered if accompanied by relevant industry experience.

Commitment to teaching excellence required. A minimum of one year teaching experience in higher education preferred.

Ability to learn relevant sections of Point Loma Nazarene University's internal systems for course management and student grading.

Ability to successfully interact with students, other educators and educational institution representatives, and the general public in a professional manner.

Personal: Evidence of Christian commitment and active church involvement. In addition, faculty agree to live in agreement with PLNU’s Community Life Covenant.

The job offer is contingent on the successful completion of a background check. PLNU will consider qualified applicants, including those with criminal histories, in a manner consistent with state and local "Fair Chance" laws.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:

The number of adjunct instructors hired varies from semester to semester, depending upon the needs of the department. Please realize that there may not presently be an adjunct position available in your specific area of expertise. When an opening becomes available for which you would be a good match, the associate dean will be in contact with you for further dialogue, interviews, etc.

Approved applicants will remain in the adjunct pool for the upcoming school year only. To be reconsidered for the following school year, applicants will need to reapply. If hired, official transcripts will be required from all undergraduate and graduate universities attended before a contract is issued.
